About

The Role
Senior Market Analyst (Demand) – Permanent – Flexible Hybrid Working, located in the Strand, London or Warwick, UK.

The energy system will continue to change rapidly and fundamentally on the path to net zero in 2050. National Grid is at the heart of these changes, which poses strategic questions for us as a business and for the wider sector. We need to move at pace and reform our energy system – to deliver energy security, to tackle climate change and to protect our people.

Group Strategy, Innovation and Market Analytics (SIMA) leads on answering high-level strategic questions for National Grid and working with external stakeholders to collectively answer broader questions for the whole industry.

We are looking for a proactive, knowledgeable energy market analyst, preferably with strong knowledge around either the UK energy retail sector or energy commodity markets, and how they impact the European electricity system. As a Senior Analyst within the Market Analytics team, you will be part of a team that navigate future pathways for National Grid by conducting in-depth energy market analyses, modelling scenarios, quantifying risks and opportunities for National Grid.

The team combines the latest market intelligence, deep energy sector expertise and sophisticated modelling tools to provide insights that matter right across the business. We provide a trusted view on energy markets outlook and share insights that help the business to make informed commercial and strategic decisions.

What You'll Do
  • Provide commentary and insight on the energy commodity market, notably the European and global gas markets.
  • Shape and influence formation of group long term forecasts for European gas and carbon prices
  • Contribute to outlooks for low carbon technologies, in particular hydrogen, for use in scenarios. Maintain an up-to-date awareness of these technologies in order to quantify and communicate any significant changes
  • Lead the delivery of insight into the impacts of changes in the energy market on consumer bills – quantify the effects of different drivers, and communicate these to stakeholders
  • Lead the development and continuous improvement of Market Analytics’ in-house models, ensuring fitness-for-purpose across multiple use cases (e.g. scenario delivery, business planning, stakeholder engagement), and clearly communicating model assumptions, limitations, and outputs
  • Deliver clear, decision-focused insights to senior stakeholders, synthesising complex market and modelling outputs into concise narratives that inform strategy, investment cases, and scenario development.
  • Drive cross-functional collaboration across National Grid, working closely with Group Strategy, M&A, Business Development, Corporate Affairs, and operational teams to provide high-impact analysis, challenge assumptions, and shape business outcomes.
  • Mentor and develop junior analysts, building team capability in modelling, insight generation, and stakeholder engagement, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and knowledge sharing.
About You
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships and work collaboratively across teams to challenge assumptions, drive alignment, and deliver high-impact outcomes.
  • Proven ability to translate complex modelling outputs into clear, decision-ready insights, articulating implications for strategy, scenarios, and investment cases to senior stakeholders.
  • Highly self-motivated, proactive and intellectually curious, with a track record of taking ownership, identifying opportunities, and driving improvements independently.
  • Strong understanding of GB and/or European energy markets; deep expertise in global gas markets or the UK energy retail market would be highly advantageous.
  • Excellent quantitative, analytical and modelling skills, with experience working with large datasets and applying statistical or advanced analytical techniques, Python / Excel VBA skills would be preferred.
  • Familiarity with power market modelling tools (e.g. PLEXOS, Aurora, BID3) and an appreciation of how modelling supports scenario development, forecasting, and commercial…
