Join and create the electricity network of the future.

We're looking for a knowledgeable and experienced Power System Expert to join us on our journey to create the electricity network of the future. This role is ideal for a candidate with a power system background and a sound understanding in power market economics
. You'll join Strategic infrastructure (SI) as a technical authority on power systems economics of the onshore and offshore electricity system in England and Wales. This means not only will you be supporting the technical challenges of today in delivering electricity to millions of homes and businesses through our infrastructure but also be at the forefront of delivering the network that will help to decarbonise a nation and help to leave our planet in a state where future generations can thrive.

You'll be recognised as a technical expert supporting of the largest overhaul of the England and Wales electricity grid in generations; ensuring that new technologies and innovative design strategies are consistently applied to our evolving transmission network, whilst ensuring that it continually meets the needs of our customers, consumers, and stakeholders. You'll use your breadth of transmission knowledge to competently challenge and evolve existing practices, technologies, and designs to ensure a fit for future network design that continues to deliver electricity safely, reliably and efficiently.

Key accountabilities
  • Provide all of SI with technical guidance and support on the electrical designs underpinning our major investment projects.
  • Provide expertise at the cross section of power system and power market modelling, be this for constraints forecasting, network expansion or economic assessments of operability solutions.
  • Provide the calm voice of reason on complex set of technical interactions as we develop projects for the future whilst also delivering the projects of today.
  • Translate and present the complex technical design issues into digestible materials ready for all types of audiences including the Executive committee.
  • Be fully aware of the emerging factors that could impact network development, such as CP2030, Connections Reform, SSEP or CSNP and so on. Be prepared to explain potential system impacts of these macro changes.
  • Lead SI technical representation on national and international working groups, seminars and conferences where appropriate across external forums (e.g. CIGRE, ENA, IET etc).
  • Actively identify emerging risks on the transmission network (including those associated with introduction of new technology and working with internal and external stakeholders, to determine their impact and potential mitigation.
What you'll need

Educated to Degree level in electrical engineering (or equivalent), and preferably a higher degree or qualification in power system engineering, you'll have a thorough knowledge of infrastructure development and design issues involved in the planning and operation of electricity transmission networks. As well as how the energy market operates in conjunction with the power system.

A comprehensive knowledge of the relevant UK industry codes and standards in the context of design requirements and impact on network operation is essential, as is a strong appreciation of electrical behaviour and performance of transmission systems in various conditions.

In addition, we're looking for someone with experience of the following:

  • Working with external regulatory bodies, industry technical groups and customers.
  • Building and sustaining relationships within a technically-focused environment and across the industry.
  • Coaching and developing technical skills of professional engineers across power system topics.
  • Presenting detailed technical information in a way understandable to non-technical audiences.
