National Grid is hiring a HVDC & FACTS System Study Manager - This position is based from our Warwick office however we offer flexible hybrid working options.
Job PurposeAs a HVDC & FACTS System Study Manager you'll lead a team of Power System Engineers and HVDC experts ensuring an efficient and safe integration of HVDC and FACTS devices into NGET's transmission network. You will lead the preparation and analysis of specialized HVDC system studies required to demonstrate compliance of the network and HVDC/FACTS devices.
Leveraging the team's specialist expertise, you will anticipate technical considerations, challenges, and solutions related to Power Systems, HVDC, and FACTS for the NGET network and the wider system. You'll proactively communicate, mitigate, manage and/or resolve challenges, (both within National Grid and with other industry experts) ahead of significant Transmission Network impact.
In addition, you'll represent NGET across the industry in all areas related to HVDC and FACTS system studies.
What You'll Do- Provide line-of-sight for the overall development of the HVDC and FACTS in line with National Grid ET strategy and ambition, and the needs of the network operabilities.
- Oversee overall compliance of HVDC and FACTS systems with the NETS SQSS, STC and Grid Code, particularly in relation to dynamic performance.
- Assess HVDC & FACTS solutions (including but not limited to reinforcement options) to manage HVDC & FACTS performance requirements in the transmission network.
- Identifying and anticipating new and future Power System phenomena, challenges and considerations across all network investment planning time horizons.
- Lead the production of strategies for the holistic development of the transmission system, including strategies for contestable opportunities and regulatory out performance strategies.
- Work with internal and external stakeholders to establish new/modify existing codes and practices to reflect new technologies, market initiatives and changes, design policy and solutions, and impacts of specific new customer types.
- Prepare and present technical information to Supplier/OFGEM/BEIS and other appropriate technical panels or groups.
- Provide specialist power system input to support planning applications, including supporting the production of public-facing documentation and providing expert representation at planning hearings.
- Provide specialist input into technical content for LOTI and MSIP need case submissions, leading on the drivers for the works and the identification and assessment of design options.
- Drive efficiency improvements in the approach to major pieces of work in the Network Development team through new approaches, clear activity scoping and controls.
- Able to utilise and apply Power System resource dynamically with peers to deliver the key objectives of the Network Development department.
- Undertake day to day management of the team including workload, resource management, performance management, safety issues and personal development plans.
We're looking for someone who has experience of managing a team of power system engineers and leading HVDC and FACTS system studies, combined with expertise in HVDC and FACTS-related system studies.
Proven leadership in delivering complex technical projects from concept to completion.
Mentoring and developing engineering talent within the team.
Ability to identify where future AC/DC network challenges are not accommodated, you'll have experience of setting and controlling clear scopes of technical work that lead to clearly defined strategic & business outcomes.
With experience of leading professional teams and technical experts, you'll have excellent stakeholder engagement skills, both internally and externally and be able to present detailed technical information in a way understandable to non-technical audiences.
Experience of working with external regulatory bodies, relevant industry technical groups and suppliers.
What You'll GetA competitive salary between £64,000 - £80,000 dependent on capability
As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus of up to 30% of your salary for stretch performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
