About the role

Are you ready to work at the heart of the UK's Electricity Transmission System? If you have a strong background in Power Systems and want to operate on the front line of our high voltage network, this could be the role for you.

The Transmission National Control Centre (TNCC) sits at the core of National Grid's real time operations. This is an exciting opportunity to join the team responsible for the safe and secure operation of the national electricity transmission network-24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

You'll be joining us at a pivotal time. We are delivering the fastest and most ambitious transformation in National Grid's history, modernising the UK's electricity network to unlock greater access to renewable energy and enhance national energy security.

In this role, you'll play a critical part in ensuring the transmission system is operated effectively, enabling timely delivery of planned works, responding quickly to faults, and supporting the safe management of planned and unplanned power system events. You will implement the outage plan, monitor site alarms, oversee operational and safety switching activities, and provide expert operational support when it matters most.

As a Senior Control Engineer, you'll coordinate the operational and safety activities required to set people to work on de energised transmission assets. You will also supervise, train, and develop more junior Control Engineers, ensuring high standards of competence and operational excellence. In addition, you will review and validate Commissioning Switching Programs to ensure they are robust and safe to implement.

The role will initially be based at our Warwick Control Centre, with the potential to move to our new Hams Hall facility in early 2028. This is a Level 8 Operations & Engineering role and operates on a shift rota-including nights and weekends-with schedules published well in advance to support a strong work-life balance. A shift allowance is paid in addition to your base salary.

About

You

You'll bring experience from a power systems or control room environment, with a solid understanding of transmission network operations and system analysis techniques. Ideally, you have previously worked as a Control Engineer, held responsibilities within a DNO control room, or operated as a Senior Authorised Person (SAP).

You'll have knowledge of the key plant, protection, and control systems used across the National Grid electricity network, along with a thorough understanding of safety legislation, operational procedures, and compliance requirements. You'll hold a Level 4 qualification in a STEM subject—preferably electrical engineering—or be able to demonstrate equivalent experience gained in a similar technical role.

Your background includes supporting, coaching, or developing others, and you're someone who stays calm and focused in high pressure or time critical situations. With well developed logical and analytical skills, high attention to detail, and strong situational awareness, you are confident in making sound operational decisions that keep people and the network safe.
