Join us as an apprentice, and help be the energy behind the change. National Gas is the backbone of Britain's energy system. We're responsible for securing the UK's energy, whilst leading the way to a net-zero future. We keep gas moving safely and reliably to power stations, industry and over 23 million homes. As the UK transitions toward a net-zero future, we’re also pioneering new solutions such as hydrogen transmission to help decarbonise the energy sector.
WhatYou’ll Be Doing
A degree apprenticeship is a brilliant option if you’re looking to gain a degree whilst hitting the ground running in the world of work. You’ll kick‑start your career blending academic study with work‑based learning. You'll split your time between learning out on site, working alongside experts solving real‑world problems, and attending dedicated training and study days. You’ll work from our Warwick office and travel to different project locations across the region.
The Major Programmes team plays a key role in shaping the future of the Gas National Transmission System. They work out what changes or upgrades the gas transmission network needs, why those changes matter, and how they should be delivered. This includes working with engineering, commercial, project delivery and regulatory teams to plan investment, explore options, build business cases and support projects through their lifecycle.
As an apprentice joining the team, you won’t be expected to make major technical decisions or lead projects, but you will get hands on experience across the whole development and planning process.
- Develop vital leadership skills, including: communication, time management, critical thinking, decision‑making and team working.
- Gain exposure to project planning & development.
- Assist in preparing documentation such as reports, summaries, cost estimates or risk logs under guidance.
- Sit in on meetings with internal teams (engineering, commercial, operations, programme delivery) to understand how projects come together.
- Support communication and coordination across teams by preparing meeting notes, slides, diagrams or project updates.
- Help analyse system data, project information or external trends to support decision‑making.
- Track progress against project timelines and identifying basic risks or issues (with support).
- Build an understanding of how the network works, what different assets do, and how large scale infrastructure projects are developed.
- Learn about the commercial and regulatory environment that shapes decisions.
You’ll be someone able to communicate clearly and concisely, as you’ll be influencing colleagues across the business, bringing them on a journey with you with your projects. Being able to build relationships quickly and having ‘softer skills’, will really help you thrive in this role. You’ll take pride in your work, be proactive and enjoy ‘getting stuck in’. You’ll need to be comfortable with travel, as you’ll be visiting operations sites and hold a UK driving licence.
Tobe considered for this scheme, you’ll need:
- Three A Levels at AAB or above (or predicted), or equivalent BTECs, or a degree from a UK institution in any subject not related to business, management or leadership.
- Having a minimum of five GCSEs at Grade C/4 or above including Mathematics and English.
- A cover letter is essential to help us understand why you're a great fit for the role. Check out our guidance below!
- Our sites are located across the UK, so you’ll need to be comfortable with travel and overnight stays. This means that you’ll need to have a driving licence by the time you would be joining us (September 2026).
- You’ll need to have permanent right to work in the UK for the entirety of this programme, as we are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role.
- As you’ll be working with Critical National Infrastructure, you’ll also need to pass enhanced National Security Vetting, meaning you’ll need to be able to provide a 5‑year UK address history. Your eligibility for certain roles may be affected by your place of…
