About UsNational Gas is securing Britain’s energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and business to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.
AboutThe Role
At National Gas, we’re not just maintaining the energy network, we’re transforming it. As we accelerate towards a cleaner energy system, this is a rare opportunity to lead the policies and standards that will underpin hydrogen and carbon capture (CCUS) at a national scale.
This is a pivotal leadership role at the heart of our net zero ambition. As Hydrogen Engineering Policy Manager, you will define and govern the engineering policy frameworks that enable the safe, compliant, and effective transition to hydrogen and low‑carbon technologies.
You’ll play a critical role in ensuring our standards evolve alongside innovation, supporting major programmes like Project Union, which aims to repurpose up to 2,000 km of pipeline into a UK-wide hydrogen network. This is about shaping the rules of the future energy system, not just operating within them.
What you’ll be doing- Lead, develop and inspire a high‑performing team, setting clear direction, managing priorities, and building capability across engineering disciplines.
- Own the governance framework for hydrogen engineering policies, ensuring robust technical assurance, regulatory compliance, and cross‑functional alignment.
- Oversee the end‑to‑end policy lifecycle, from development through to approval and implementation, ensuring consistency and quality.
- Ensure effective integration between innovation, project delivery, and policy, embedding lessons learned and continuous improvement.
- Drive the publication, communication, and adoption of engineering policies across the organisation.
- Provide expert engineering leadership across FEED, design, and construction stages, coordinating SMEs and ensuring readiness.
- Lead the development and integration of Safety Case approaches for new energy molecules, supporting safe deployment at scale.
You’re a collaborative and credible engineering leader who can influence at all levels, translating complex technical detail into clear, actionable direction. You bring a structured, forward‑thinking mindset and thrive in environments where innovation, governance, and delivery intersect.
Key Requirements & ExperienceEssential:
- Degree‑qualified in a relevant engineering discipline (e.g. Mechanical, Chemical, Process Engineering).
- Chartered Engineer status (or actively working towards it).
- Proven experience delivering or assuring engineering design across the full project lifecycle.
- Deep understanding of process safety principles, particularly in high‑pressure systems.
- Strong working knowledge of UK regulatory frameworks (e.g. GSMR, COMAH, PSSR, COSHH, DSEAR).
- Excellent analytical and problem‑solving capability, with the ability to influence engineering decisions.
Desirable:
- Experience with gas transmission infrastructure, including pipelines, compressor stations, and metering systems.
- Knowledge of decarbonisation technologies, hydrogen systems, or gas blending.
- Experience developing or governing technical standards or policy frameworks.
