About The Role

National Energy System Operator (NESO) recognises the potential of bright and talented individuals, and we encourage you to join us as Great Britain’s energy system undergoes an ambitious and vital transformation, working alongside industry to create a cleaner, more sustainable future.

These are exciting times at NESO, particularly for the CFO function. Since becoming an independent public sector organisation in October 2024, we have been building and shaping our function and culture.

We recognise the value of in‑house specialists and are looking to expand our Tax team to support our tax compliance objectives. Whether you’re an expert in VAT or passionate about corporation tax, this small team offers the opportunity to demonstrate your expertise and learn new things while helping NESO optimise its tax arrangements.

This role is based in Warwick and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. Flexible working arrangements are open for discussion.

Key Accountabilities
  • Support the Senior Tax Manager in ensuring adherence to NESO’s Tax Policy.
  • Maintain appropriate tax governance policies and processes to identify and minimise tax risk for NESO.
  • Help move the CFO function towards becoming fully digital.
  • Build strong relationships across NESO, acting as a trusted advisor on tax matters to the Business.
  • Assist the Senior Tax Manager in maintaining good external relationships with HMRC, DESNZ and Ofgem, including responding directly to enquiries from HMRC.
  • Support the provision of tax‑specific information for the notes to the Annual Report & Accounts, ensuring an accurate representation of NESO’s tax position.
  • Assist with creating new processes for tax compliance, leveraging the capabilities of our new ‘Workday’ ERP system.
  • Operate effective controls around all aspects of the tax process, suggesting and helping to implement continuous improvement opportunities to optimise NESO’s tax compliance.
  • Help manage any outsourced contracts, although these will be small, given our desire to keep expertise in‑house.

Applicants must have the right to work in the UK by the start of employment. Visa sponsorship may not be available for this role and will be considered as per business requirements.

About You
  • Chartered Tax Association (CTA) qualification (active membership required), or a relevant accounting qualification (ACA, ACCA) desirable.
  • Evidenced post‑qualification experience in UK tax (VAT, corporation tax, employment taxes or a combination).
  • The ability to effectively communicate technical aspects of tax to a wider audience.
  • Strong stakeholder management and interpersonal skills to enable effective relationships internally and externally.
  • A ‘can‑do’ attitude, looking for continuous improvement opportunities to help the CFO function become fully digital.
What You’ll Get
  • Competitive salary of £60,000 - £65,000 dependent on experience and capability.
  • Bonus based on company performance.
  • 26 days annual leave as standard.
  • Competitive contributory pension scheme with the employer doubling your contribution up to 12%.
  • Annual enrollment to NESO Savings Plan; a 50% matching contribution on savings of £20‑£500 per month.
Benefits
  • Flexible bank holidays & holiday trading.
  • Additional birthday day off.
  • Cycle to work scheme, retail & gym discounts.
  • Private medical insurance, critical illness insurance & personal accident insurance.
About Us

At the National Energy System Operator (NESO), we play a vital role in tackling climate change and securing Great Britain’s energy future. We operate the world’s fastest decarbonising electricity system and are working toward running it carbon‑free for a short period this year, provided electricity is supplied from renewable sources. We provide expert advice to government on delivering a clean power system by 2030.

In autumn 2024 the Electricity System Operator (ESO) transitioned to become NESO – an independent, expert public corporation with a whole‑system view across electricity, gas and hydrogen, fully regulated by Ofgem.
