Peterborough or Warwick, Hybrid (3 days office, 2 days remote) About the role

National Gas is at the heart of Britain’s energy transition. As we deliver ambitious net zero goals, we're investing in some of the UK's most significant hydrogen infrastructure programmes, including Project Union and East Coast Hydrogen. These projects have the potential to transform the energy landscape, creating a cleaner, more sustainable future for generations to come.

As PMO Lead, you'll provide leadership, integration and assurance across the project controls function within our New Molecules portfolio. Working across multiple interdependent programmes, you'll ensure planning, cost, risk and change management activities operate as a fully integrated system, helping our teams deliver safely, efficiently and with confidence.

This is a high-impact role where you'll support strategic decision-making, strengthen governance, drive performance improvement and provide senior leaders with the insight they need to successfully deliver critical hydrogen infrastructure projects.

What you'll be doing
  • Leading multidisciplinary project controls teams across planning, cost, risk and change management disciplines.
  • Ensuring programme baselines for scope, schedule, cost and risk remain robust, accurate and aligned across all projects and work streams.
  • Driving integration between project controls functions to provide a single, reliable view of portfolio performance.
  • Providing assurance, challenge and guidance to project teams, partners and leadership teams to improve delivery.
  • Analysing programme performance, identifying trends, risks and opportunities, and supporting the implementation of corrective actions.
  • Escalating risks, issues and interdependencies through governance forums to support informed decision-making.
  • Developing project controls frameworks, governance processes and reporting standards across the portfolio.
  • Supporting project delivery, commercial performance, regulatory obligations and funding requirements.
  • Leading high-quality forecasting, estimating and performance reporting activities.
  • Building project controls capability through coaching, mentoring and the development of colleagues.
  • Working closely with project partners and stakeholders to ensure effective interface management and programme integration.
About you

You're a collaborative and influential leader who can bring together diverse teams around a common goal. Comfortable operating at both strategic and operational levels, you're able to challenge constructively, communicate complex information clearly, and build trusted relationships with stakeholders at all levels of an organisation.

Key requirements & experience
  • Deep expertise across planning, cost management, risk management and change control.
  • Proven ability to lead and influence multidisciplinary teams within a matrix environment.
  • Strong understanding of programme controls, project interdependencies and portfolio-level impacts.
  • Experience providing assurance, governance oversight and constructive challenge to senior project and programme leadership.
  • Ability to translate complex programme data into meaningful insights that support executive decision-making.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and performance management skills.
  • Experience leading PMO or Project Controls functions across large-scale programmes or portfolios.
  • Experience operating within regulated environments such as energy, utilities, infrastructure or similar sectors.
  • Understanding of governance, funding and reporting requirements associated with major programmes.
  • Experience designing and implementing project controls frameworks, processes and governance models.
  • Strong coaching and mentoring capability, with a track record of developing high-performing teams.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence senior leaders, delivery partners and executive audiences.
