Paediatric Clinical Sister / Charge Nurse

South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a dedicated and forward‑thinking experienced nurse to join our Acute Paediatric Team at Warwick Hospital.

The Paediatric Unit includes Mac Gregor Ward, a 17‑bed inpatient area (including high‑dependency beds), a paediatric outpatient area and a 5‑bed paediatric assessment unit (PAU).

We work closely with the Emergency Department and our team of clinicians, paediatric ACPs, paediatric physiotherapists and specialist nurses.

Ideally you will be able to work flexibly, including nights and weekends, but flexible working arrangements will be considered.

Main duties of the job

To lead and co‑ordinate the team to maintain and deliver a high standard of family‑centred care to all children, young people and their families in accordance with our ward philosophy.

To ensure high quality and cost‑effective services at all times and deputise the ward manager in their absence.

Job responsibilities

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Hold a Diploma/Degree in Children’s Nursing.

Be a first‑level registered nurse with significant experience in paediatrics, including an extended period in an acute paediatric setting.

Possess relevant post‑basic education and experience, which should include a significant period at Band 5.

Provide evidence of continuous personal and professional development.

Possess the aptitude and confidence for working within a rapidly changing environment.

Have excellent communication skills both verbal and written.

Have excellent interpersonal and organisational skills.

Key Responsibilities

To provide clinical and professional leadership and support to all non‑medical staff in the ward, ensuring nursing practice is based on current and best evidence.

Take responsibility for your own personal and professional development, maintaining clinical credibility and competence at all times.

Keep an up‑to‑date personal portfolio, in line with revalidation requirements and maintaining NMC registration.

Ensure the ward’s philosophy aligns with the principles of clinical governance and that all staff understand its significance to practice.

In conjunction with the Ward Manager, ensure that KPIs and Infection Prevention standards are maintained each month.

Clinical

To participate in the setting and maintenance of high standards of evidence‑based nursing.

Supervise and evaluate the work of all nursing staff.

Promote a child‑focused, family‑centred ward environment at all times.

Promote child and family involvement in care planning, ensure parents and carers are kept informed, together with any necessary family education, ensuring junior staff develop the necessary skills.

Implement a communication system to keep patients and their relatives/families informed of treatment and progress. Undertake audits at regular intervals to maintain record‑keeping standards.

Provide clinical leadership for ward teams to facilitate a high standard of evidence‑based individualised nursing care from admission to discharge.

Provide clinical leadership for the care of all children and young people on the ward including surgical and CAMHS patients.

Supervise and monitor junior staff in developing necessary skills to identify care priorities and address them promptly, seeking advice when appropriate.

Communicate and interact with children, young people and their families and staff in a non‑judgemental way, demonstrating mutual respect and trust utilising a variety of communication skills.

Ensure children, young people and their families’ needs are met in a courteous, helpful and compassionate manner.

Liaise with other agencies and professionals to maintain good service provision.

Maintain effective relationships between the ward and the multidisciplinary team.
