U.S. Customs and Border Protection provides a pay range of $37,112.00 per year to $54,160.00 per year (GS‑03, Step 1 to GS‑04, Step 10). Actual pay will be based on skills and experience.

DutiesThe Pathways Program offers students (high school to graduate level) the chance to work in federal agencies while still in school and to be paid for the work performed. In this role you will provide technical assistance to specialists in the Office of Trade, performing line‑program and administrative functions, including:
- Record keeping, reporting, and data management.
- Compiling, maintaining, and updating data, lists, and reports.
- Checking and verifying data against source documents and identifying discrepancies.
- Updating manuals on policies, directives, and memoranda.
- Assisting in preparing reports using databases and automated systems, and developing tracking/filing systems for documents.
- Managing miscellaneous duties such as reviewing reports, making copies, arranging conference rooms, and filing information on specific cases and projects.
You must be a U.S. citizen, registered with Selective Service if male and born after 12/31/1959, and have lived in the U.S. for at least three of the last five years. Minimum age is 18. Proof of student status must be submitted with the application. Other requirements include:
- English‑language competency for pre‑employment processes.
- Background investigation and drug‑testing procedures in accordance with DHS Drug‑Free Workplace Plan.
- Compliance with federal ethics rules, criminal conflict of interest statutes, and outside‑employment approvals.
- Participation in the E‑Verify system for eligibility confirmation.
Applicants must be enrolled as a student (high school, technical school, college, university, graduate school, apprenticeship, etc.) and meet the following academic criteria:
- GS‑03:
Completion of one academic year of post‑high‑school study. - GS‑04:
Completion of two full academic years of post‑high‑school study or an associate’s degree. - Minimum GPA of 2.0 for undergraduate programs, 3.0 for master’s or higher.
Candidates with recent political appointments or schedule designations must disclose this information per OPM guidance. Graduation or completion dates must be met by 01/14/2026.
Additional InformationA Pathways Participant Agreement will be required if selected. Students must maintain enrollment and good academic standing for the full duration of the appointment. Conversion to a permanent position is possible within 180 days of completion, but not guaranteed.
