Job Summary
Located in the heart of the nation's capital, the District of Columbia Office of Human Rights (OHR) is one of the nation's premier civil rights enforcement agencies, enforcing some of the most progressive civil rights laws in the country. Our team is comprised of a diverse group of individuals who share a commitment to social justice. We are currently seeking a talented individual for a Legal Assistant position in the Hearing Unit of OHR.
This position provides legal and administrative support to the Unit's Administrative Judges (AJs) and the Commission. The incumbent is responsible for providing legal and administrative support to the Hearing Unit Administrative Judges and the Commission.
Duties and Responsibilities
Assists and supports the Chief Administrative Judge, Administrative Judges, and Commissioners in the performance of duties designed to ensure that the Unit provides fair and efficient adjudication services. Supports the day-to-day administration of the Unit's docket by entering and maintaining accurate docket data in the Unit's case management system.
Manages hardcopy and electronic case files. Prepares, maintains, delivers, and retrieves case files and documents in accordance with policies and procedures developed by the Chief ALJ and OHR. Interacts and communicates with the public orally and in writing when providing customer service relating to the adjudication of cases by the Unit. Without providing legal advice, answers a wide range of questions from the public regarding calendaring, filing procedures, and case status.
Qualifications and Education
Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the individual with the knowledge, skill and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. To be creditable, one (1) year of specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression.

District Pathways Program:
This position is part of the Pathway to Government Employment Partnership Program. District residents who received a high school diploma from the District of Columbia Public Schools or a District public charter school or received a GED or its equivalent from the District of Columbia will receive priority consideration for this entry-level position. Applicants must provide a high school transcript, GED certificate, high school diploma, or other applicable documentation along with verification of District residency before the District government may extend a final offer of employment.
Position Designation: This position has been deemed Security Sensitive under the guidelines of the D.C. Personnel Manual. Incumbents of this position are subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to Chapter 4 of D.C. personnel regulations. Accordingly, incumbents must successfully pass a criminal background and consumer credit check as a condition of employment and will be subject to periodic criminal background checks for the duration of their tenure.
