SummaryNOTE:

This position is located at the Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Washington DC. The Washington DC VA Medical Center - located within sight of the Nation's Capitol - is the only health care system that specifically provides care to Veterans. Offering tertiary care in a Complexity Level 1A hospital.
- United States Citizenship:
Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy - Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
- The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
- Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia
- Residency Training:
Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification - Approved residencies include:
- Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)
- Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
- Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States)
- Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
- PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e.
- not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis - PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged
- PRPs are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
- Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
- Proficiency in spoken and written English
- Preferred Experience:
3-5 years of clinical experience after fellowship training - Leadership within RT is also desired

- Physical Requirements:
Lifting up to 35 pounds - intermittently; moderate carrying (15-35 pounds) - intermittently; lifting over 35 pounds with assistive devices in accordance with the Safe Patient Handling Policy except in emergent situations; pulling - intermittently; pushing - intermittently; reaching above the shoulders - intermittently (both hands required); walking - intermittently; standing - intermittently; kneeling - intermittently; and repeated bending.
- Develop and maintain an ambulatory pulmonary medicine practice
- Provide Pulmonary and Critical Care consultations in the inpatient and outpatient context
- Perform routine Pulmonary and Critical Care medicine procedures: bronchoalveolar lavage, brush, endobronchial and transbronchial biopsy
- Other procedures: bedside ultrasound guided thoracentesis, pig-tail catheter, and chest tube placement
- Routine critical care medicine procedures: central and arterial lines, ventilator management, paracentesis, lumbar punctures, right heart catheterization, tracheal intubations, etc.
- Point of care ultrasound utilization in the critical care and pulmonary settings
- Interpret pulmonary function tests, including cardiopulmonary exercise tests
