THOR Solutions is actively seeking a highly motivated senior-level Naval Architect to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG)’s Ship Design Team in Washington, DC
. An ideal candidate will have significant prior experience with U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding programs, standards, and regulations.
- Provide technical support and documentation for ship feasibility, concept, preliminary and contract design, integration, stability analysis, hydrodynamic and seakeeping properties.
- Evaluate systems and equipment, develop and analyze requirements, perform studies and documentation relating to hull form, stability, weights, structures, and design.
- Develop system documentation and ship specifications for surface assets and boats, perform structural analysis and design using ISO and class society standards.
- Conduct, witness, and document tests including stability tests, speed, power, maneuvering, and seakeeping trials.
Location: Full time onsite at USCG Headquarters in Washington, DC. May be limited hybrid flexibility with customer approval.
Travel: Up to 10% travel is anticipated for ship checks.
Typical Physical Activity: Primarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve: repetitive motion. Periodic visits to waterfront/shipboard environments. May involve: traversing shipboard environments (e.g., confined spaces, ladders, hatches) or vision.
Typical Pay Range: The anticipated pay range for this position in the identified location(s) is $120,000 – 150,000. Actual compensation offered will be based upon individual factors including education, qualifications, and experience.
Eligibility for a SECRET Security Clearance is Required

This position requires eligibility for a Secret security clearance, to be obtained after hire. Only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance; therefore, only current U.S. citizens will be considered for this position.
- Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture or another relevant technical, engineering, or a marine discipline from an ABET-accredited institution.
- At least six (6) years of progressive experience in Naval Architecture.
- At least one (1) year of experience related to U.S. Federal or commercial ship or boat building acquisition programs required.
- Experience with naval architecture software solving complex problems regarding hull design.
- Experience with corrosion principles of metals for surface assets and boats.
- Knowledge of USN, USCG, IACS and/or commercial ship design rules and regulations.
- Proficient with common productivity software.
- Strong communications skills.
- Master’s degree in Naval Architecture or another relevant technical, engineering, or a marine discipline from an ABET-accredited institution.
- Experience with DoD ACAT I or DHS Level I shipbuilding programs preferred.
- Relevant certifications preferred, such as:
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
- DHS Systems Engineering certification.
- DHS Program Management certification.
