General Summary of Position

Job Summary:

Med Star Health is seeking a Certified Medical Assistant to join our team at Med Star Health Urgent Care. The ideal candidate will possess excellent customer service and patient interaction skills. Our Urgent Cares operate 7 days a week from 8AM to 8PM, with a schedule of three 12-hour shifts including rotating weekends, varying month to month.

The Medical Assistant will perform clinical and administrative duties under the supervision of a physician/provider and/or a registered nurse. Responsibilities include venipuncture, medication and vaccine administration, vital signs measurement and documentation, assisting with patient exams, and providing telephone and clerical support.

This position may require floating to other sites within the system.

Primary Duties:
  • Assist providers with office procedures, patient preparation, examinations, and education. Support the clinical care team to ensure optimal patient flow and manage patient volume. Conduct patient screenings for preventive care, ongoing support, safety, and fall risk. Perform motivational interviews and identify behavioral health needs.
  • Report patient, family, and staff concerns; participate in performance improvement activities; ensure compliance with safety and infection control protocols; maintain logs and supplies; engage in population health management activities.
  • Perform selected tests including Point of Care Testing, TB skin testing, ECG, pulmonary function tests, vision and hearing tests. Document activities in the EMR. Follow up on tests such as pap smears, blood levels, HIV, mammograms, and STDs. Collect and process specimens and complete requisitions.
  • Provide escort and assist with patient discharge. Maintain infection prevention standards, update equipment maintenance records, and manage supplies. Conduct telephone screenings and determine appropriate patient disposition.
  • May insert IV catheters, monitor urinary catheters, and administer medications and injections within scope. Use EMR for medication refills, test requisitions, and insurance pre-authorizations.
  • Qualifications:
    • High School Diploma or GED.
    • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by the American Association of Medical Assistants within 1 year or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologists within 1 year.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
    • Experience in an ambulatory care medical office or equivalent preferred. Externship experience is strongly preferred.
    • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program is preferred.
    • For Cardiology offices: 6 months of relevant experience, or a Bachelor's degree in exercise physiology/science or related field, or completion of a cardiac technician course.

    This position offers a hiring range of $19.17 - $33.08 per hour.
