Overview

SOME (So Others Might Eat) exists to help homeless and poor individuals and families in Washington, DC. Our more than 30 programs throughout the district provide comprehensive services that lead to mental and physical health, continued sobriety, job training, living-wage employment, and affordable housing. We meet immediate needs with food, clothing, and healthcare, and offer the tools one needs to live with hope, dignity, and greater independence.

SOME (So Others Might Eat) is seeking a full-time Individual Philanthropy Officer to support our Development department.

Position and Compensation

Position Description

The Individual Philanthropy Officer is responsible for managing a portfolio of approximately 100–150 donors and prospects, with a focus on securing major and principal gifts to support SOME’s annual giving and Capital Campaign priorities. Working closely with the Individual Philanthropy Team, this role develops and implements strategies to identify, cultivate, retain, and upgrade major gift prospects while also strengthening mid-tier and planned giving pipelines.

The Individual Philanthropy Officer plays a key role in building meaningful donor relationships that advance SOME’s mission and ensure long-term philanthropic support.

Schedule

Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm or 40 hours per week;
Some evenings and weekends, if needed.

Requirements

Required: Bachelor’s Degree and three to five years of experience with major gifts ($10,000 and more) for a 501(c)(3) human services provider or similar organization, OR ten years of major gifts experience, in lieu of a Bachelor’s Degree. A passion and commitment to SOME's mission. Competency with Microsoft Office and proficiency using a donor database or CRM to track and monitor a portfolio.

Preferred: Capital Campaign experience or experience managing multi-year commitments, strongly preferred. Experience with Salesforce;
Graduate degree, CFRE, CAP, or relevant professional certificate or training is highly regarded.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to manage a portfolio of 100 to 150 major gift donors and prospects.
  • Proven track record of closing major gifts and stewarding donor relationships.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of moves management day-to-day functions.
  • Knowledge of fundraising best practices and principles.
  • Professional demeanor and good judgment when interacting with SOME’s staff and leadership, high-net-worth donors, and key stakeholders.
  • High level of accountability, self-motivation, and ability to work collaboratively and with confidentiality.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to write effectively.
Expected Contributions:
Fundraising
  • Manage a portfolio of 100 to 150 donors and qualified prospects through quality, substantive contacts and face-to-face visits to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors to successfully close gifts ranging from $10,000 to more than $1 million.
  • Work with the Individual Philanthropy team and key stakeholders’ staff to meet or exceed dollar and visit goals, with a focus on securing new multi-year gifts in support of a capital campaign.
  • Develop, execute, evaluate, and refine strategies to connect donors with SOME’s priorities.
  • Acquire and maintain a thorough and accurate understanding of SOME's mission, strategic plan, key programs, and funding priorities.
  • Effectively communicate SOME's priorities and successfully match donors' philanthropic interests to funding priorities.
  • Contribute to and review written materials, including individual donor strategies, briefings, solicitations, and acknowledgments in a quality consistent with SOME’s development communication standards.
  • Utilize and update SOME’s donor database or CRM by recording activities, contacts, gift proposals, and strategies on an ongoing basis consistent with current policies.
