Overview
National Housing Trust (NHT) has been dedicated to creating and preserving affordable housing for almost 40 years. We build, preserve, and finance affordable housing and use that expertise to inform and advance resident-focused solutions to strengthen the broader affordable housing industry.
NHT has a staff of 60+ across five program areas:
Policy, Lending, Real Estate Development, Community Outreach and Impact, and Sustainability. Our hallmark is our cross-functional, integrated approach to innovating, demonstrating, and amplifying solutions to the affordable housing crisis in the U.S.
NHT owns and operates the Savannah Apartments located at 3230 13th St SE, Washington, DC 20032. As part of our commitment to residents, NHT is working with the Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) to launch a yearlong initiative to address food insecurity.
Our Community Outreach and Impact (COI) team is dedicated to resident success. We believe that all people deserve affordable housing and that integrated, onsite services provide accessible support to our residents.
The Savannah project is DC-based and involves direct work with residents on-site. This position offers no remote work options and requires time spent on food pantry operations and related activities.
PositionWe are seeking one Savannah resident to serve as a Food Pantry Coordinator. This is a contract position that will begin in February 2026 through December 2026. The Food Pantry Coordinator will oversee operations of our small community food pantry and will work closely with staff from NHT and residents in your community. This position will be contracted by NHT.
This position is DC-based. Due to the nature of the work, this position offers no remote work options. This position requires up to 5 hours monthly, including all distribution days and preparation time.
Responsibilities- Manage inventory
- Schedule and supervise volunteers during operating hours
- Coordinate with NHT on food deliveries and restocking
- Maintain pantry organization and cleanliness standards
- Process resident intake and maintain confidential records
- Monitor expiration dates and food safety compliance
- Identify and address specific community nutritional needs
- Coordinate special holiday or seasonal distribution events
- Lifting heavy items
- Stooping, kneeling, and standing while managing inventory and distributions
- Hand deliveries to households with mobility challenges
- Taking instructions from National Housing Trust staff regarding how to conduct the work and store the supplies
- Because this position works with youth, a background check is required
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Compassionate attitude and commitment to community service
- Ability to work independently and lead a team of volunteers
- Basic computer proficiency for record-keeping
