Job Description Summary

GW’s Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine (MITM) is searching for a full‑time Post‑Doctoral Associate for Dr. Maggirwar’s laboratory. The lab focuses on vascular complications associated with HIV‑1 infection. Using immune cells isolated from blood samples of patients, the research will investigate the roles of platelets and ART in modulating immune responses in HIV‑1 pathogenesis, cardiovascular disorders, and cerebral small vessel diseases.

Additional mechanistic analyses will involve humanized mice infected with infectious HIV‑1. The postdoctoral associate will investigate clonal hematopoiesis in monocytes derived from HIV‑infected and control subjects, aiming to understand the function of this cellular subtype in HIV‑associated comorbidities and neuroinflammation. The work will incorporate epigenetic modification through omics approaches. Responsibilities include planning experiments, analysing and interpreting data, publishing results, and presenting findings  individual will receive advanced training to enhance professional skills and research independence, and may lead and direct lower‑level research staff.

Responsibilities

Include
  • Guiding research projects through conducting experimental work.
  • Maintaining detailed documentation of experimental work.
  • Presenting data within and outside the laboratory group at meetings and symposia.
  • Maintaining close communication with PI and collaborators regarding progress.
  • Writing, editing, and submitting manuscripts/abstracts detailing the project results.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned; the omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning logically related duties.
Postdoctoral Associate
  • holds a PhD or equivalent degree;
  • develops skills by participating in scholarly projects that are actively mentored by a member of the university faculty;
  • receives financial support in the form of a salary typically funded by grants, contracts, or departmental funds secured by a faculty mentor;
  • has a limited term of up to five years at GW.
Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have fulfilled all requirements for the award of a PhD or equivalent qualification in a relevant field by the date of employment.

Desired Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Immunology, Virology, Systems Biology or related fields.
  • Preference for individuals with demonstrated experience in genomics/proteomics studies of clinical isolates of immune cells and validating outcomes using in vitro/in vivo models of disease, including wet‑bench assays. Experience handling rodents, conducting in vivo experiments, flow cytometry, and advanced microscopy imaging is desired.
Hiring Range

$62,232 – $70,344
