Senior Fellow - Economic Security and Technology (EST) Front Office
The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non‑profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. With a staff of about 250 employees, including more than 120 analysts, CSIS addresses the changing dynamics of international security across the globe. CSIS’s Economic Security and Technology Department (EST) is a center of excellence that promotes economic dynamism and sustains technological advantages essential to U.S. growth, security, and global influence.
The Department focuses on technological and commercial competition, trade, investment, intellectual property, innovation, advanced technologies such as AI, semiconductors, digital, quantum, and cybersecurity, energy security, climate, and the economic relations with China and partners. It has launched products such as the signature Tech Edge Report, country economic security studies, and the Back and Forth series.
The Senior Fellow will serve as the senior analyst within the EST front office, working directly with the President of the Economic Security and Technology Department on high‑priority research initiatives that further EST and enterprise‑wide impact goals.
Key Responsibilities- Work directly on the President EST’s research priorities, including patriotic capital and national interest investing; domestic U.S. economic and technology competitiveness (e.g., the Tech Edge series); and international economic security issues such as allied economic cooperation and dollar diplomacy.
- Help with research design; author and co‑author policy analyses and research reports for internal and external publications; conduct independent research projects that shape key policy debates; develop and deliver research briefings and presentations to government officials, private sector leaders, and other key stakeholders.
- Coordinate and mentor Associate Fellows, Research Assistants, and interns on the front‑office team.
- Ensure delivery and quality of EST’s suite of integrative products such as the Tech Edge Report and country studies, advising teams on data and research methods.
- Support the front office’s fundraising goals by preparing proposals for project funding, writing grant reports, and contributing to departmental strategic planning and internal operations.
The successful candidate will have a doctorate or equivalent and extensive experience in the Washington think‑tank and research community. They will demonstrate excellent research and writing skills with proven experience writing for policy audiences and external publications. Candidates should be able to identify emerging issues of policy relevance, pursue self‑directed research and writing, and engage effectively with diverse stakeholders across government, industry, and allied nations.
Substantive knowledge in macro‑fiscal policy, productivity policies, technology (including AI), and international economic relations is required. The candidate must be a collaborative team player willing to work closely with researchers across EST and the broader organization, and be prepared to take on coordination and organizational tasks when necessary.
The salary band for this position is $100,000 to $200,000, commensurate with experience. This position also offers bonus potential based on individual and organization performance.
