Position: Officer I Unarmed

General Summary of Position

Ensures a safe environment for our patients, staff, and visitors. Patrols hospital property, responds to calls for assistance, and reports on conditions, objects, or persons that may impact the security and/or safety of patients, associates, physicians, visitors, or vendors. Mentors and trains security staff and assumes charge role as needed. Officers are essential associates in a 24/7 environment and may be required to be flexible with scheduling and work “off‑shifts.”

May obtain and maintain State of Maryland and/or District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department Special Police Officer commission to carry out duties associated with crime control and response as an Unarmed Officer assigned within the hospital.

Primary Duties And Responsibilities
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards.
  • Immediately responds to emergencies to provide necessary assistance to employees and customers.
  • Conducts designated security patrols throughout the facility as directed; may patrol campus/grounds via security motor vehicle or bicycle.
  • Monitors security and appearance of lobbies, waiting areas, elevators, and entrances.
  • Prepares and submits reports and logs of all incidents, investigations, and activities; maintains department records, reports, and files as required.
  • Utilizes nonviolent crisis intervention and de‑escalation techniques to keep staff, patients, visitors, and others safe, calm, and respected onsite.
  • Provides assistance for way‑finding, parking, deliveries, and other requested information for the hospital and Med Star affiliates.
  • Responds to security and medical code calls, investigates incidents and accidents, gathers information and evidence, notifies appropriate authorities or superiors, and calls for back‑up assistance as necessary.
  • Testifies at legal proceedings, hearings, and trials.
  • Works cross‑functionally to ensure safe and secure environments.
  • Conducts foot security patrols of hospital buildings and grounds as required; observes and monitors conditions, objects, or persons that might require police action.
  • Controls access to and inspects packages of those leaving buildings; reports all safety, security, and law violations.
  • Collects and secures patient valuables and lost‑and‑found articles.
  • Monitors camera surveillance and other security technology systems as directed.
  • Responds to circumstances where the exercise of law enforcement authority may be required.
  • Interacts with visitors and maintains designated security posts throughout the facility as directed.
  • Ensures quality outcomes for the security department by communicating with security staff and the public.
  • Participates in meetings, committees, and community outreach; participates in multi‑disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
Minimal Qualifications Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Associate’s degree preferred
Experience
  • 1–2 years related security or law enforcement experience required, or
  • 1–2 years of Med Star service in lieu of security experience
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid State Driver’s License in good standing required
  • MD Special Police Commission preferred, or
  • Special Police Officer – DC preferred; if SPO must satisfy ongoing training to maintain commission in Maryland and/or DC required
  • Certified Healthcare Safety Professional preferred
  • CPR – Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) required within 90 days
  • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit
  • Must successfully complete all Med Star initial training related to violence prevention, de‑escalation, and crisis prevention intervention required

  • Ability to remain calm and thoughtful during a crisis
  • Ability to assist in de‑escalating situations with strong emotions and conflict
  • Basic computer skills preferred
