Field Training Officer (250003DS)

The Field Training Officer (FTO) will provide on the job training (OJT) and mentor new officers post initial training for a prescribed period of time. Ongoing mentoring of officers and reinforcement of training objectives and policy adherence will be required as needed. After the initial period of OJT, the FTO will provide senior security management with a written assessment of the new officer's progress and suitability for independent work assignment.

The FTO will oversee shift operations as needed. As part of the uniformed security division, the FTO will provide physical security for the hospital and grounds and protect patients, visitors, and employees from physical harm or loss of personal property. Protect the assets of the hospital from fire, theft, damage or misuse and immediately respond to emergency situations as directed.

Proactively identify and resolve security/safety issues that pose a potential risk to hospital and exercise mature judgment, sound reasoning in the performance of job responsibilities. Able to maintain a courteous and tactful demeanor in all interactions with employees, visitors, and patients.

Qualifications

Minimum Education
High School Diploma or GED.

Minimum Work Experience
5 years Security or law enforcement experience and have an active commission as a special police officer in the District of Columbia.
7 years Security or law enforcement experience (Preferred).

Required Skills/Knowledge
Valid driver’s license required.
Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
Must be able to climb hospital stairs to the heliport in under two minutes.
Must be able to walk/run a mile in ten minutes.
Must be able to work in secluded areas.
Must be able to maintain the confidentiality of information.

Functional Accountabilities

Field Training
  • Mentor and continue on-the-job training with new officers.
  • Provide a detailed written assessment for the officer’s progress and suitability for independent assignment.
  • As authorized, oversee shift operations.
Emergency Response and Incident Reports
  • Ensure that the applicable policies, procedures and directives are followed according to the specifics of the emergency situation.
  • Effectively de-escalate disruptive behavior.
  • Remain in control of emotions and not take 'acting out behavior' exhibited by others, personally.
  • Write accurate, grammatically correct incident reports; conduct thorough initial investigations;
    Obtain statements from witnesses for criminal and other noteworthy events; follow–up on initial reports for additional information.
  • Preserve evidence and crime scene in accordance with departmental policies.
  • Ensure that all noteworthy events are properly recorded in the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system; ensure that dispositions of all emergency response incidents are thoroughly recorded in the dispatch notes.
Security Equipment Inventory Control & Lost and Found Processing
  • Ensure that a thorough inventory of security equipment is performed at the beginning and end of each shift; ensure that equipment broken or damaged during the course of the shift is immediately reported to the security supervisor and any inventory discrepancies.
  • Ensure that all lost and found items are processed in accordance with departmental policy.
Safety
  • Speak up when team members appear to exhibit unsafe behavior or performance.
  • Continuously validate and verify information needed for decision making or documentation.
  • Stop in the face of uncertainty and take time to resolve the situation.
  • Demonstrate accurate, clear and timely verbal and written communication.
  • Actively promote safety for patients, families, visitors and co-workers.
  • Attend carefully to important details - practicing Stop, Think, Act and Review in order to self-check behavior and performance.
Organizational Accountabilities Security Operations Center (SOC)
  • Diligently monitor all video monitoring systems AND consistently and immediately act upon observed activity that is or potentially will compromise the security of the hospital.
  • Immediately take the appropriate action during duress alarm incidents; dispatch officers to the location accordingly.
