Job OverviewThe George Washington University Police Department seeks highly motivated individuals for the position of Police Detective. The GW Police Department provides primary law‑enforcement and public‑safety services to a diverse population of 25,000 students, faculty, and staff across two urban campuses in Washington, D.C. The department promotes professional growth and community engagement guided by core values of accountability, trust, and transparency.
Responsibilities- Conduct assigned criminal investigations for the university.
- Maintain federal compliance and ensure adherence to DC laws, ordinances, and administrative policies.
- Review police reports, direct personnel at crime scenes, and control scenes to protect evidence.
- Maintain the crime log and investigative files and reports.
- Provide analysis and recommendations for new procedures related to security and loss prevention.
- Collaborate with the Metropolitan Police Department and allied agencies to maximize investigatory potential.
- Report directly to the Police Sergeant, Investigations Unit.
- Perform additional work‑related duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED plus five years of relevant professional experience.
- Degree must be conferred by start date; otherwise, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be accepted.
- Possess and maintain a District of Columbia Special Police Commission, including weapon systems qualifications.
- Successfully complete a physical, drug screen, and psychological examination approved by the GW Police Department before employment.
- Hold a valid driver’s license and be eligible to drive GW vehicles per University Policy for the duration of employment.
- Provide proof of U.S. citizenship and be at least 21 years of age, as required by the MPD SOMB.
- Previous experience conducting criminal investigations preferred.
$25,210 - $40,030
