The George Washington University Police Department seeks highly motivated individuals for the position of Police Detective. The GW Police Department provides primary law‑enforcement and public‑safety services to a diverse population of 25,000 students, faculty, and staff across two urban campuses in Washington, D.C. • Conduct assigned criminal investigations for the university.
• Maintain federal compliance and ensure adherence to DC laws, ordinances, and administrative policies.
• Review police reports, direct personnel at crime scenes, and control scenes to protect evidence.
• Maintain the crime log and investigative files and reports.
• Provide analysis and recommendations for new procedures related to security and loss prevention.
• Collaborate with the Metropolitan Police Department and allied agencies to maximize investigatory potential.
• Report directly to the Police Sergeant, Investigations Unit.
• Perform additional work‑related duties as assigned.

• High School Diploma or GED plus five years of relevant professional experience.
• Degree must be conferred by start date; otherwise, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be accepted.

• Possess and maintain a District of Columbia Special Police Commission, including weapon systems qualifications.
• Successfully complete a physical, drug screen, and psychological examination approved by the GW Police Department before employment.
• Hold a valid driver’s license and be eligible to drive GW vehicles per University Policy for the duration of employment.
• Provide proof of U.S. citizenship and be at least 21 years of age, as required by the MPD SOMB.

• Previous experience conducting criminal investigations preferred.

$25,210 - $40,030

Pay for new employees is determined based on the level, experience, and qualifications of the candidate, following GW policy.
