Police Sergeant (non‑exempt) – Inside Higher Ed
Job OverviewPerforms law enforcement functions on university property necessary to protect the life, well‑being, and property of students, faculty, staff, visitors, dignitaries, and others. Duties include patrols, event security, investigations, access‑control systems and circulation and safety systems. The incumbent serves as shift supervisor, oversees subordinates, and reports directly to the Lieutenant.
Responsibilities- Serve as shift supervisor, ensuring safety and security to the university.
- Direct work activities of subordinate officers and consult with immediate supervisors.
- Authorize and deliver emergency notifications to the university community during critical incidents.
- Conduct patrols, event security, investigations, and access‑control operations.
- Coordinate special assignments (Support Services, Investigations, or Community Engagement).
- College degree required.
- Minimum of five (5) years of law‑enforcement experience, including at least one year of supervisory experience.
- 1–3 years of security, law‑enforcement, or military experience required.
- U.S. citizenship and minimum age of 21.
- Must qualify for and maintain a Special Police Officer’s Commission.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to pass university driver certification.
- Successful completion of the Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Academy or equivalent training.
- Basic to intermediate knowledge of criminal and civil law and police policies and procedures.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, email, and related computer applications.
- Professional and courteous demeanor with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be able to pass written tests, report‑writing tests, drug screenings, medical and psychological evaluations, and a comprehensive background investigation.
- Experience in critical incident response and notification procedures.
On‑Campus. This position may require on‑call, rotating shifts (day, evening, overnight) with fluctuating days off.
Pay Range$22.88 – $42.10 per hour, subject to qualifications, experience, and university needs.
