Special Police Officer – Children's National Hospital
Special Police Officers (SPO's) will provide protective services for the patients, families, staff, and property of Children's National Health System (CNHS). As directed, CNHS SPO's respond to emergency situations while enforcing the established hospital policies and in accordance with the laws of the District of Columbia. Department personnel must maintain a tactful and courteous demeanor in the exercising of duties.
Pay InformationPay Range (Provided by Children’s National Hospital): $37,336.00/yr – $62,046.40/yr. Your actual pay will be based on your skills and experience.
Responsibilities• Provide protective services for patients, families, staff, and property.
• Perform access control using state‑of‑the‑art technology to ensure patient safety.
• Conduct security patrols of the entire campus to proactively identify risks.
• Work with medical professionals to advance patient safety.
Safety
- Perform productive security patrols of the hospital, garage, and perimeter; recognize conditions that compromise security or safety and take immediate action to mitigate.
- Immediately notify supervisors of security/safety‑related problems or issues.
- Take proactive measures to mitigate thefts, disturbances and other criminal incidents.
- Check that visitors and staff members wear proper identification badges/pass; ensure compliance and address non‑compliance.
- Adhere to posted orders for all fixed and patrol positions.
Emergency Response
- Ensure timely and appropriate response for emergency situations.
- Follow applicable policies, procedures, and directives per the specifics of the emergency.
- Effectively de‑escalate disruptive behavior.
- Maintain composure and not take others’ behavior personally.

- Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED (Required).

Work Experience:
2 years as a Special Police Officer (Preferred). - Required Skills/Knowledge: Valid U.S. driver’s license; effective oral and written communication; ability to sit and stand for prolonged periods; climb stairs in emergencies; wear department‑issued body armor; work outdoors if necessary; handle volatile situations under stress; familiarity with Microsoft Office; excellent customer service skills; knowledge of Washington, D.C. criminal code; experience working as an emergency responder (law enforcement, fire/rescue, military); knowledge of HIPAA rules and restrictions.

Licenses/Certifications:
Special Police Officer commission from the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department;
Cardio‑Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) (Required).
