Electrician

Duties

• Appropriately apply the National Electric code (NEC) to projects in order to select the correct materials and methods for an installation or repair.
• Assist in the park's annual preventive maintenance schedule and annual operating programs for the electric shop.
• Provide technical advice, guidance, and support in the oversight of existing and proposed park facility buildings and utilities.
• Plan and lay out electrical systems from drawings and interface new work with existing systems.
• Identify and correct job safety and health hazards.

• U.S. Citizenship required.
• Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
• Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
• Participation in Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
• Valid driver's license and operation of a government or private motor vehicle required.
• Wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards; a uniform allowance will be provided.
• Work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work as required.
• Travel overnight away from home up to two nights per month; obtain a government charge card for travel.
• Be considered emergency personnel.
• Capable of lifting at least 50 pounds.

Upon acceptance, a 1‑year probationary period will be conducted during which fitness and continued employment advancing the public interest will be evaluated.

• Applicants must be at least 18 years old or at least 16 years old and: have graduated from high school or completed a formal vocational training program or have a statement from school authorities; or be enrolled in a secondary school and work only during school vacations or part‑time under a formal student employment program.
• Obtain and maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority after training.

• Skill to perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision (screen out).
• Skill to use and maintain hand tools (electrical work).
• Skill to use electrical drawings.
• Knowledge of electrical equipment.
• Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
• Theory and instruments (electrical, electronic) used in shop and trade practices.
• Ability to troubleshoot electrical problems.

This position requires performing electrical work from ladders, scaffolds, platforms, and other cramped and hard‑to‑reach places. Duties include sitting, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, crawling, and working in uncomfortable positions. The incumbent may be exposed to electrical shock, sparks, arc hazards, and other health hazards. Remote work may require walking, hiking, or driving over rough terrain. The incumbent is expected to lift and/or carry items up to 50 pounds, occasionally exceeding 50 pounds.

Work is both indoors and outdoors. Outdoor work may be subject to extreme weather conditions: wind, rain, snow, ice, and temperatures ranging from below 0 to over 100 degrees. Work may take place at elevations from sea level up to 10,000 feet. The incumbent may be exposed to dust, fogs, mists, gases, smokes, sprays, vapors, noise, vibration, cuts, abrasions, hazardous materials, and wildlife.

The incumbent must comply with all safety and occupational health requirements and wear protective clothing, gloves, face shields, and possibly a respirator.
