Job Title: Life Skills Trainer FSLA Status: Non-Exempt

Reports To: Assistant Program Coordinator

Pay Range: $21.15/hour - $26.44/hour

Program Type: Single and Family Programs

Organizational Overview

For nearly 50 years, House of Ruth has empowered women, children, and families to rebuild their lives and heal from trauma, abuse, and houselessness. We offer comprehensive services for survivors, including service-enriched housing, nationally accredited child and family development programming, and free counseling to anyone who has experienced domestic violence.

Position Summary

The Life Skills Trainer is responsible for teaching a range of daily living and coping skills to women and children to ensure their well-being, receive services, and maintain effective program operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Engage the women and/or children to develop rapport, support case management goals and assist in meeting their needs.
  • Provide crisis intervention and intervene during incidents. Provide positive role modeling. Conduct client intakes.
  • Develop skills and facilitate support groups. Teach daily living, coping and social skills (e.g., emotional self-management, parent/child interactions, problem solving, safety planning, communication, cooking, budgeting, time management, organizational skills).
  • Help maintain a safe, secure and non-violent environment; monitor the building and occupants; manage emergencies following procedures.
  • Complete apartment/room inspections and bed checks; report maintenance problems.
  • Organize and conduct on-site and community-based social-recreational activities.
  • Directly assist women and/or children in completing tasks; provide child care as needed.
  • Ensure adherence to program expectations and address non-adherence.
  • Monitor medications and complete related documentation; conduct urine toxicology screens and related documentation.
  • Conduct evacuation drills and document results.
  • Interact with internal staff and external contacts to meet coordinated needs.
  • Screen telephone calls and walk-ins, provide crisis intervention and appropriate referrals; communicate crucial issues to staff.
  • Read and complete all relevant documentation and forms.
  • Transport individuals to appointments, activities and shopping trips.
  • Distribute and monitor supplies; maintain an organized, clean work environment.
  • Maintain log, distribute mail and funds; attend trainings and meetings; perform other duties as needed.
Education and/or Experience
  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent;
    Associate’s Degree preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a similar role preferred.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule in a 24/7 operation and be on call as needed, including some weekends.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Successfully passing the following pre-employment process is required: FBI Fingerprint/Background Check, Alcohol and Drug Test, Urine Screening, TB Test, Police Clearance, and must be fully vaccinated including booster.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle; ability to drive to multiple site locations.
  • Strong analytical, planning and organizing skills; self-starter with good time management; MS Office 365 proficiency.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills; ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations; team player with cross-functional collaboration.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach others and a passion for working with women and/or children.
