Starting salary: $40.83 - $86.87 per hour based on workload category.
This is an adjunct (part‑time) position. Compensation will be pro‑rated according to the amount of workload assigned. Spokane Colleges reserves the right to cancel this recruitment without notice. Academic employees are represented by the Association of Higher Education (AHE), which is affiliated with NEA and WEA. Membership is optional.

Spokane Community College, part of Spokane Colleges, serves 15,000 students with career technical, liberal arts, and adult education programs in Spokane and surrounding rural communities.

About the Position

Spokane Community College, Rural Education Division seeks qualified candidates for consideration of employment in this adjunct faculty position in English Composition and Literature. The instructor will teach English Composition I (ENGL& 101) and English Composition II (ENGL& 102). Other classes may be available in future quarters.

First review of applications will occur on 08/01/2025, and interested applicants are encouraged to apply early. Classes begin on September 17, 2025.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepares for and instructs English courses through traditional classroom and a variety of modalities including, but not limited to, ITV, hybrid, online, and hyflex distance education modes.
  • Maintains and develops community relationships with local organizations such as libraries, historical societies, area high schools, and community action agencies.
  • Participates with K‑12 to offer dual/concurrent enrollment (Running Start).
  • Provides availability and accessibility to students for academic consulting and support through scheduled office hours, e‑mail, or other effective communication means.
  • Communicates expectations, establishes grading criteria, and develops course syllabi, handouts, and instructional materials; evaluates student progress and provides timely feedback.
  • Participates in district, division, department, or faculty meetings; in‑service training; curriculum development; academic consulting; workshops or seminars; and service on councils or committees.
  • Complies with state and federal law and college procedures in areas such as grade submission, bookstore orders, office support, student financial aid, safety, and health issues.
  • Supports and advances the Spokane Colleges strategic plan and performs other duties as assigned.
  • May instruct courses in related disciplines, supervise paraprofessionals, advise student clubs or associations, and manage assigned work‑study students.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Earned Master’s degree in English Composition, Composition/Rhetoric, Literature, or an MFA from an accredited institution.
  • At least one full academic year of teaching experience.
Desired Qualifications
  • Two or more academic years of teaching experience at the college level.
  • Teaching experience in a community college setting.
  • Experience with online learning platforms (Canvas, Angel, Blackboard, etc.).
  • Experience with interactive video (ITV) delivery.
  • Experience working with a rural, often disadvantaged adult and high‑school student population.
  • Experience with various instructional media and technologies, including hybrid, online, or hyflex.
Requirements

Applicant must provide acceptable documentation of U.S. citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States. Background check and sexual misconduct declaration required.

Benefits

Adjunct faculty who work two consecutive quarters at 50% or more of full‑time load qualify for benefits. Benefits begin the first day of the month following the start of the quarter.
