PurposeThe job of substitute teacher, Center for Juvenile Detention Services, is done for the purposes of providing one‑on‑one and group instruction, maintaining records of student progress, and managing classroom behavior in one or more of the following areas: language arts, math, history, science, and life/job skills. This position will work as a substitute on an as‑needed basis.
Responsibilities- Instruct students individually or in groups to optimize development and enhance academic skills.
- Maintain security measures to comply with detention center policies and enforce safety rules.
- Manage classroom behavior using behavior modifications and established discipline rules.
- Model respect, responsibility, and accountability to demonstrate positive behavior.
- Monitor students to evaluate behavior daily and enforce security and safety rules.
- Work as a member of a team to provide consistency in student behavior management.
- Assist other personnel as required to ensure an efficient and effective work environment.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Adhering to safety practices.
- Operating standard office equipment and pertinent software.
- Planning and managing projects.
- Preparing and maintaining accurate records.
- Algebra and/or Geometry knowledge; reading technical information; composing documents; facilitating group discussions; analyzing situations to define issues and draw conclusions.
- Understanding of grammar and punctuation, child development stages, conflict resolution methods, safety practices and procedures.
- Ethical professional standards, communication with diverse groups, confidentiality, meeting deadlines, working with incarcerated youth in a secure environment, teamwork.
- Job‑related experience desired.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related area.
- Valid Washington State Teaching Credential.
- WSP/FBI criminal history background clearance (employee expense).
- Mandatory training provided by NEWESD 101.
