Job Summary

Freeland is a small but bustling community that serves the interconnected rural communities on South Whidbey island. The library is a vital resource that connects these communities with basic library services and safe spaces to access knowledge and resources.

The Library Associate At Large is a paraprofessional position that provides library support services at five community libraries including the Clinton, Coupeville, Freeland, Langley, and Oak Harbor Sno-Isle locations. These libraries represent diverse communities and populations across Whidbey Island, providing critical support for access to library resources and services. Sno-Isle Libraries locations on Whidbey often share the same customers and regularly collaborate for programming and referrals for services.

The Library Associate At Large is a welcome and vital member of all staff teams at our community library locations.

This position will be supervised at the Freeland library and will contribute to the Library District's effective operation, providing library services, spaces, and resources that are representative of diverse cultures and perspectives, intentionally inclusive, and accessible to everyone. The successful candidate will be expected to travel to other Whidbey Island libraries, sometimes on short notice, as staffing needs require. Mileage between library locations is reimbursed.

This position may include morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend hours including Sundays. Successful candidate may be required to adapt to future schedule and location changes depending on library needs.

Because commuting to Freeland from off-island requires taking the ferry from Mukilteo, we ask all applicants to familiarize themselves with the associated costs and challenges of such a commute before applying.

This position is part of a bargaining unit represented by AFSCME Council 2.

• Provide general, basic reference and information service by assisting customers in the use of library facilities, equipment, resources, and services. Refer complex readers' advisory and reference questions to a Librarian or appropriate staff member.
• Provide courteous and efficient customer service by performing circulation desk tasks.
• Create and present programming for all customer groups as assigned.
• Develop program materials, including reading lists, promotional displays, and presentation materials.
• Provide training to customers in basic library skills including the use of public computers, catalog and reference computers, Internet, and devices.
• Assist customers in resolving technical problems or issues. Maintain and troubleshoot equipment utilized in a community library.
• Perform collection maintenance activities through the use of reports and data, to include weeding the collection for condition as well as reallocation of library materials.
• Perform other library support services including opening and closing buildings and assisting in maintaining the library in neat, clean, and orderly condition.
