Location: Goldendale
Communications Officer - Emergency Management - Goldendale, WA - Full-Time

Non-Exempt - Salary set by the Union, Step 1-4, $24.47 - $30.01/hr open until filled.

Receives and prioritizes emergency and non-emergency calls from the public and dispatches appropriate police, fire, or emergency units when needed. Monitors units in the field and operates multi-frequency radio equipment, computer terminals, and data recording equipment to manage law enforcement and public safety information.

  • Evaluates incoming emergency calls, requests relevant information, and dispatches appropriate units or provides necessary assistance to agencies.
  • Provides information and assistance to the public, referring complaints and incident reports to patrol deputies or command personnel. Responsible for initiating outbound calls as needed.
  • Ensures accurate information collection to facilitate proper action, with a basic knowledge of criminal and civil law.
  • Operates communication equipment including radios, telephones, paging systems, and tape recorders, adhering to FCC radio procedures.
  • Within six months, becomes certified on ACCESS/WACIC computer consoles to retrieve law enforcement data such as vehicle registration, criminal records, warrants, and stolen property information.
  • Maintains logs of all radio transmissions, phone calls, and actions taken, ensuring accurate records of all duty-related activities. Capable of composing detailed statements.
  • Prepares complaint forms with relevant details to assist officers and agencies in resolving issues.
  • Monitors the activities and locations of police, fire, and emergency units, maintaining radio contact and anticipating potential dangers.
  • Relays critical information between units and agencies, coordinating efforts across multiple jurisdictions including Klickitat County, Washington State Patrol, Oregon State Patrol, and others.
  • Assists walk-in traffic at the department counter, taking complaints and directing individuals to appropriate agencies.
  • Performs clerical duties such as typing reports, filing records, and performing other administrative tasks.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned, demonstrating knowledge of local public agencies, law enforcement principles, and emergency procedures.
  • Requires a high school diploma or G.E.D. and at least one year of experience in emergency services, law enforcement, or a related field, with familiarity in handling emergency communications.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities include operating communication equipment effectively, exercising judgment in prioritizing calls, maintaining accurate records, and communicating respectfully and clearly with the public and field units.
