Salary & Incentives

Newly appointed CBPOs can receive up to a $15,000 incentive per year for a three‑ to four‑year service contract, depending on location. Annual base salary ranges from GS‑5 to GS‑12
, with starting levels between $40,332 and $109,952 per year. Locality pay varies by duty location, and a fully trained CBPO is eligible for up to $45,000 in overtime pay in addition to the starting salary.

Qualifications

GS‑5:
Minimum of three years full‑time general work experience, or a bachelor’s degree, or a combination of both.

GS‑7:
Minimum of one year specialized full‑time work experience or a bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement (3.0 GPA or higher) or one year graduate‑level education. Combination of experience and graduate education also qualifies.

GS‑9 and Higher:
Previous or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience qualifies. See the GS‑9 Job Opportunity Announcement for details.

Other Requirements
  • U.S. citizenship
  • Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years
  • Under 40 years of age (exceptions apply for veterans or current federal civilian law enforcement)
  • Veterans’ preference eligibility may apply
Training

Applicants will complete a two‑week paid pre‑academy orientation at their home port, followed by a 101‑day CBP Field Operations Academy at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, GA. Selection for southern border, Miami, or Puerto Rico locations requires completion of an online Spanish training program.
