Job Summary and Responsibilities
This position is responsible for performing forensic SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) examinations, crisis intervention and personal support in coordination with the Social Work department on a per diem basis.
Essential Job Functions- Performs forensic assessment, screening and evaluation of patients who are victims of sexual assault in accordance with established guidelines/protocols; collects and preserves physical evidence and maintains chain of custody for each examination.
- Collaborates with a multi‑disciplinary team on treatment recommendations in accordance with established protocols and provides guidance with respect to SANE requirements, criteria and patient rights.
- Ensures compliance with state reporting requirements and appropriate documentation as identified by department policy and regulatory requirements/agencies.
- Coordinates with appropriate community resources in medical discharge planning for sexual assault patients.
- May provide expert testimony in the courtroom setting in regard to SANE examination, evidence and findings.
- Applies appropriate protocols in performing SANE examinations of sexual assault victims, and analyses patient care needs and treatment.
- Uses forensic equipment appropriately, including cameras and colposcope, in the documentation of injury and collection of evidence.
- Possesses knowledge of regulations, protocols, techniques and equipment/tools of SANE forensic examinations, including the collection and preservation of related forensic evidence, and effective patient care methodologies.
Education/Work Experience
- One year of related work experience in an acute care setting that demonstrates requisite job knowledge and abilities.
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing; BSN preferred.
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse issued by the Washington State Board of Nursing.
- Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS certification. Quarterly AHA Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) competency certification is required post‑hire.
- Certification by the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner is desired and must be maintained as current thereafter.
