Work Hours: 40 hours/week, M-F schedule.

Qualifications
  • Clearance:
    Must be able to obtain a security clearance to work in a military treatment center.
  • Education:

    High school equivalent and completion of NAACLS accredited phlebotomy program or two‑part phlebotomy program.
  • Certification:
    Certification/registration through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) or other equivalent certification. BLS certification is also required.
  • Experience:

    Must have performed 40 hours of classroom training, 100 hours of clinical training, and 100 successful venipuncture (including skin punctures). Must have experience working as a phlebotomy technician in the preceding 2 years.
Duties / Responsibilities
  • Draws blood samples on adults, children, and infants, including newborns, from patients ranging from minimally to critically ill and with physical and mental challenges.
  • Informs patients on specimen collection procedures, reviews laboratory request slips, determines specimen types, and ensures proper patient preparation has been accomplished.
  • Selects appropriate venipuncture site and cleans to prevent contamination, considering any adverse reaction to cleaning solutions. Chooses needle size/type and determines specimen collection method (vacutainer system or syringe).
  • Performs routine and complex venipuncture, including median veins of arms and hands. May take multiple samples from a single site; for children and infants chooses finger or heel stick as appropriate.
  • Draws medical blood alcohols when directed by relevant command and authorities.
  • Applies sterile dressing, instructs patients on post‑procedure care to prevent infection or bruising, and provides immediate care for fainting or nausea, including monitoring vital signs and providing first aid or CPR as needed.
  • Collects specimens into appropriate anticoagulant, preservative, or clot tubes, labels accurately, and ensures proper separation and triage for sections.
  • Responsible for delivery of PRIORITY or STAT specimens, ensuring sections are aware of specimen status.
  • Prepares, monitors, and collects blood for Glucose Tolerance Testing and other timed serial draws, administering glucose doses and monitoring patient response throughout the test.
  • Maintains clean, sanitary drawing area, restocks supplies, and secures controlled items such as needles and syringes.
  • Provides training to newly assigned personnel and phlebotomy students from technical colleges, military programs, and nursing staff on all phlebotomy techniques and emergency treatments.
  • Greets and screens patients at the laboratory reception desk, verifies request slips, logs information into the EHR/LIS, and advises patients on laboratory services and specimen handling.
  • Manages patient flow using the automated ticketing system, routes specimens, and ensures accurate patient demographic and test data entry.
  • Requests services from rapid response teams, Interventional Radiology (IR), Pediatric Sedation Services, and other required support as needed.
  • Undergoes other related duties as assigned.
