Island Health is looking for an experienced Medical Assistant – Certified (or Registered) to support our full‑time day shift clinic located on Orcas Island, WA.

Work Schedule:

1.0 FTE
• 40 hours per week
• Day shift

Salary Range:
Medical Assistant - Certified $22.97–$34.45
; Medical Assistant - Registered $20.41–$30.61

Other Compensation:
National Certification Premium Pay $0.50
; Sign‑On Bonus $4,000 for eligible Medical Assistant - Certified

Medical Assistant – Certified Responsibilities
  • Room patients, collect medical data, document for appropriate visit and assist with physical exam.
  • Process patient situations over the telephone to determine appropriate medical attention.
  • Under the direction of a Physician or Advanced Practice Clinician, administer vaccines and medications IV, PO, IM, SQ; conduct EKG and Spirometry testing.
  • Administer various tests in CLIA‑waived lab (glucose, OGTT, INR, drug screens, pregnancy tests, TB tests, etc.).
  • Facilitate and manage clinic flow.
  • Provide direct patient care to patients of all ages.
  • Facilitate exchange and coordination of information regarding patient process.
  • Consistently utilize information systems confidentially and accurately.
  • Act as a patient advocate through effective communication with patients, family, and other staff regarding treatment, ordered tests, procedures, medications, and hospitalizations.
  • Coordinate service between clinic and other healthcare entities (insurance, referrals, public health, social services).
  • Provide legible, pertinent, complete, and timely documentation.
  • Perform record checks per clinic policies and protocols.
  • Maintain safety and resource utilization for cost‑effective, quality care.
  • Follow clinic policies and procedures.
  • Use universal body substance isolation and infection control protocols.
  • Provide feedback to peers and/or supervisors regarding system or staff performance issues.
  • Monitor inventories, quality assurance requirements, standards, and other patient‑related needs.
  • Assist in stocking medical and pharmaceutical supplies; notify staff when inventories are low.
  • Enter data for state‑supplied childhood vaccine program.
  • Assist with oxygen tank checks, outdated supplies, medication checks.
  • Document medical refrigerator temperatures and adjust as necessary.
  • Maintain clinical and professional expertise through continuing education.
  • Function within Island Hospital HIPAA Compliance Policies and Confidentiality Agreements.
  • Interact positively with Administration, Directors, Managers, Supervisors, peers, co‑workers, subordinates, patients, and visitors.
  • Meet attendance standard and maintain sick utilization at or below average levels.
Job Requirements
  • Two (2) years of previous clinical experience in an out‑patient physician practice preferred.
  • Maintain current Medical Assistant‑Certified or Medical Assistant‑Registered credential issued by the WA Department of Health.
  • Maintain current BLS certification.
Work Environment and Physical Demands

Employee is exposed to indoor environmental conditions, including dust, pollen, pollutants, fumes, and communicable diseases. Noise level is moderate. Tasks include speaking, hearing, and understanding conversations, using hands for manual dexterity, occasional standing, walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and lifting up to 25 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment for computer systems.
