JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE:
Interpreter for the Deaf
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
REPORTS TO:
Building Principal
DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
To interpret and translate from lectures and verbal discussions for deaf students, tutor deaf students in selected subject matter areas.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Using total communication skills, the interpreter will interpret/translate classroom lectures and discussions to deaf students; convey instructor’s intent as well as spoken word.
- The interpreter will use reverse interpretation, relaying questions and contributions from deaf students to instructors and encourage deaf students to use standard signs.
- The interpreter will assist the classroom instructor in meeting needs of deaf students, and will communicate assignment instructions and other information from the instructor to the deaf student.
- The interpreter will provide note-taking material for the students and assist the classroom instructor in securing hearing note takers to take notes for deaf students.
- The interpreter will complete a daily interpreter log relating all important information to the teacher of the Deaf/Hearing Impaired and will record student progress.
- The interpreter will perform related instructional aide duties as required by the Special Services Program.
- The interpreter will perform interpreter services during school hours to other deaf individuals within the district when on school related business.
- Will perform other related interpreter services as assigned.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year to be established by the Board.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Support Services Personnel and contract.
