Overview

Colvin Ranch is a fifth‑generation cattle ranch operating on over 1,000 acres in Thurston and Lewis counties with over 300 head of cattle. We utilize regenerative and sustainable management practices along with conservation grazing to raise the highest quality grass‑fed, grass‑finished beef for grocery stores, restaurants, schools, food banks, and customers throughout Southwest Washington.

Position Description

Our business is growing, and we’re looking for an experienced Livestock and Grazing Manager to oversee day‑to‑day livestock operations and all aspects of grazing while ensuring the highest standards of animal health and pasture management.

Key Responsibilities

This full‑time role involves managing daily livestock care, leading ranch hands, and actively participating in hands‑on ranch work.

Requirements
  • Minimum 5+ years experience managing cattle operations of a similar size or larger.
  • Proficiency in low‑stress cattle handling, pasture management, fencing, and infrastructure maintenance.
  • Experience with rotational grazing and conservation grazing practices.
  • Strong mechanical skills to operate and maintain ranch equipment and machinery.
  • Ability to lift 100 pounds, work in all weather conditions, and ensure a safe working environment.
  • Proficiency with Google documents as well as grazing and livestock software.
  • Must be authorized to work in the US and pass a background check.
Responsibilities Livestock Management
  • Oversee the daily management, feeding, watering, and care for all cattle, including animal health, nutrition, and pasture management.
  • Manage cattle health, including vaccinating and treating cattle as needed in coordination with veterinarians and other specialists.
  • Tag, band, and treat calves.
  • Maintain and monitor records on herd performance, health, breeding, and vaccinations.
  • Order hay, feed, and minerals, and oversee their delivery to the ranch.
  • Sort, load, and haul cattle utilizing low‑stress practices.
Grazing and Land Management
  • Manage pastures following sustainable grazing practices and rotational grazing plans.
  • Build, operate, and maintain electric fencing systems, water systems, and related infrastructure.
  • Support infrastructure repairs and improvements for corrals, barns, and fences.
  • Manage pasture improvements, including seeding, mowing, brush removal, and weed control measures including herbicides.
  • Operate and maintain ranch equipment (tractors, ATVs, trailers, etc.).
  • Monitor forage quality, pasture conditions, and soil health.
Teamwork and Communication
  • Hire and manage ranch hands, part‑time, and seasonal employees.
  • Communicate with owners regularly to develop and execute sustainable operations strategies, infrastructure improvements, and livestock management practices that will improve the overall herd health and quality of grass‑finished beef.
  • Coordinate restoration work with partners including non‑profits and agencies such as NRCS and US Fish and Wildlife Service.
  • Represent the ranch’s mission, vision, and values when interacting with visitors, partners, and community members.
