Department OverviewThe Academic and Student Services Department supports the academic success, professional development, and well‑being of approximately 260 undergraduate students each term. Within this department, the Student Services team oversees the residential operations of the UCDC program. Unit responsibilities include housing operations, community development and programming, housing assignments, crisis management and emergency response, basic needs coordination, environmental health and safety, and compliance with Title IX and Clery Act requirements related to harassment, bias and incident reporting.
The department also collaborates closely with Facilities and Operations staff to coordinate housing logistics, safety and building support for the residential and academic facilities, and occasionally works with Guest Housing and Events staff on building access or related support items.
The Assistant Manager supports the overall operation of the UCDC residential and student services program, ensuring a safe, inclusive and developmentally supportive environment for students participating in the University of California Washington Program. This position provides leadership in housing operations and crisis response, supervises the Coordinator of Student Development (CSD) staff and student staff responsible for desk coverage and community engagement, and supports the unit's conduct and compliance processes.
Through this work, the Assistant Manager helps maintain a high‑quality residential experience that promotes student well‑being, accountability and connection to the broader academic and professional mission of UCDC. As a live‑on professional staff member, the Assistant Manager plays a critical role in student well‑being, staff supervision and 24/7 emergency response, rotating as Level 2 on‑call with the Manager. This position is located in Washington, DC.
- 50% Housing Operations Leadership:
Manage all aspects of housing operations, including room assignments, move‑in/move‑out logistics, and coordination with Facilities on occupancy tracking and room changes. Utilize the Star Rez housing management system to maintain accurate records of room assignments, occupancy data and housing communications. Serve as the Student Services primary liaison with Facilities and Housekeeping to address residential concerns. Ensure housing operations align with UC system policies, procedures and best practices.
Oversee the Student Services Desk, ensuring efficient daily operations for package distribution, equipment checkouts and student inquiries. Manage desk staffing using a hybrid model of CSDs and student employees, including recruitment, training and scheduling. Oversee the Basic Needs Food Pantry, including ordering, stocking and inventory management, to ensure consistent access to essential food and supplies. Coordinate with assigned CSD to conduct environmental health and safety checks each academic term.
Assist the Manager with development, review and implementation of emergency response plans. - 20% Staff Supervision and Training:
Directly supervise Coordinators of Student Development (CSDs), ensuring they provide peer mentorship, crisis response and community programming. Train and develop CSDs in housing operations, student conduct, crisis management and engagement strategies. Provide regular feedback and formal performance evaluations to promote CSD professional growth and leadership skills. Oversee CSD implementation of the UCDC student engagement plan. - 10% Student Conduct and Policy Enforcement:
Serve as primary conduct officer, overseeing cases documented and submitted by CSDs. Educate students on community standards, housing policies and conflict resolution strategies. Ensure all conduct cases align with UC policies and procedures. Coordinate with UC campus conduct offices as needed for case management and student support. Oversee conduct‑related technology and collaborate with the Manager to maintain and update the UCDC Code of Conduct. - 10% Crisis Response and On‑Call Duty:
