Job Description SummaryThis Research Specialist A will be part of a dynamic and expanding research program focused on hereditary gastrointestinal cancer risk syndrome where the individual will serve as lab manager for the laboratory side of the program and will perform laboratory research with a specific emphasis on studies focused on hereditary gastric and colorectal cancer. The position will be focused on lab management, performing experiments, and processing human biosamples within a basic science laboratory within the Division of Gastroenterology and within Penn’s Gastrointestinal Cancer Genetics Program.
Responsibilities will include a wide range of basic science techniques, including work with human biosamples, establishing and maintaining human-derived organoids, and working with mouse models and managing a mouse colony. Additionally, this position with oversee lab management activities of the lab (which includes on average 4-7 lab members) including ordering reagents and materials, as well as interactions with regulatory groups thermore, this position will also have substantial collaborations and interactions with other members of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Genetics Program, including both clinical and basic science research staff, as well as with other collaborating labs and investigators within and outside of Penn’s Perelman School of Medicine.
- Lab management:
Ordering reagents and materials as needed for the lab, interaction with regulatory groups at Penn including EHRS, maintaining lab inventories (ie reagents, cell lines, etc). - Research in mice:
Animal husbandry, breeding, genotyping, injection, as well as tissue processing including isolation and embedding of mouse organs/tumors for sectioning and staining. - Processing of human biosamples obtained from clinical studies as well as use of these samples for experiments including organoid generation, immunohistochemistry, etc.
- Research in organoids:
Initiation, propagation, genetic manipulation. - Perform additional duties as assigned.
- CONTINGENT UPON FUNDING.
- Bachelor of Science and 0 to 1 year of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Science/healthcare and/or public health/public policy background is preferred.
