Duties
The Pacific West Region is recruiting for temporary seasonal positions not to exceed six months (1,039 hours). Dates of employment vary by funding, weather, and visitation. The following are the major duties for the Physical Scientist position:
- Provide technical support in GIS and GPS to users of all skill levels.
- Collect, develop, and manage GIS data according to industry best practices for park management and decision making.
- Share GIS data as geospatial data services and develop web mapping applications displaying GIS data.
- Design, develop, test, and implement scientific monitoring protocols to determine resource condition.
Physical activity may include standing, walking, climbing, and lifting heavy objects. Activities occur in physically dangerous areas. Sedentary documentary research and report writing work requires concentration and long periods of writing.
Working ConditionsWork is performed indoors and outdoors in all weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, volcanoes, caves, fire lines, arctic environments, swamps, deserts, and forests. Flying in fixed‑wing aircraft and helicopters is possible. The National Park Service may allow telework with supervisor approval.
Requirements- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- Meet Selective Service registration requirement for males.
- Direct Deposit (Electronic Funds Transfer) program participation required.
- Valid State‑issued driver’s license required for official motor vehicle duties. Submit a photocopy and affidavit annually.
- Uniform wear and compliance with National Park Service uniform standards. Uniform allowance provided.
- Travel and relocation expenses not paid.
All qualifications must be met by 11:59 PM (EST) when the applicant limit is reached. Credit will be given for appropriate qualifying experience. All experience should describe duties, responsibility dates, and full or part‑time hours (e.g., 40+ hours per week).
- BASIC QUALIFICATIONS (1301 Physical Sciences job series)
- Completion of a degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics with at least 24 semester hours in physical science or related engineering science (mechanics, dynamics, materials, electronics). Include transcripts.
- OR a combination of education and experience equivalent to one of the majors above, with at least 24 semester hours in physical science or related engineering science. Include hours per week worked and transcripts.
- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (GS‑09)
- Experience:
Minimum one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑07 in GIS, data collection, protocol documentation, or enterprise data systems. Include hours per week worked. - OR
Education:
Master’s degree or two full years of graduate education leading to such a degree in a relevant discipline. Transcripts required. - OR Combination:
Education and experience equaling at 100% of the requirement. Submit transcripts and calculate percentages.
