Campus Safety Assistant – Bethel School District

This position is for 5 hours per day, 180 days per year (PSE Salary Schedule Level 10 – $29.99).

General Summary

The Campus Safety Assistant patrols school property and responds to incidents related to the safety and protection of district students, staff, and property.

Essential Functions
  • Respond to calls concerning the safety and protection of district students, staff, and property.
  • Provide guidance and instruction to students on consequences of their actions; discuss options and choices.
  • Patrol areas in and around schools as needed; confront trespassers as necessary; intervene in individuals suspected of committing crimes on or near school property; assist principals and staff in dealing with disruptive students.
  • Talk with students and non‑students to gather information on potential problems, confront them as appropriate, and report violations of laws, district rules, and regulations to school authorities.
  • Investigate rumors, activities, or incidents that could disrupt the campus environment (including drugs, alcohol, fights, crimes, and gang activity); build relationships to promote communication.
  • Inform school and district administration of problems on or adjacent to campuses involving students and non‑students.
  • Assist principals in responding to incidents involving alcohol, drugs, fights, and the confiscation of weapons from students and non‑students.
  • Prepare reports describing situations around the school campus for use in student discipline, law enforcement, and courts; maintain records and statistics.
  • Collaborate with local law enforcement and district officials to enhance campus safety; provide information to staff and students about property protection and safety measures; maintain positive working relationships.
  • Assist principals or law enforcement officers in investigating crimes; question suspects, witnesses, and victims; maintain confidential information as appropriate.
Other Functions
  • Transport students with behavioral or health problems on school administration’s request.
  • Operate video cameras, two‑way radios, and cellular phones; drive district vehicles as needed.
  • Supervise student activities and events such as dances and sports.
  • Serve on district committees and/or departmental work teams; model appropriate cooperative behavior and protect confidential information per district ethical guidelines.
  • Perform related duties consistent with the position’s scope and intent.
  • Work flexible hours when requested by the principal.
Reporting Relationships

Reports to the assigned school principal(s) and receives coordination and guidance from the Risk and Security Manager.

Mental Demands

Confrontational situations require constant awareness and attention to personal safety; representation of the district on potentially controversial matters; extended shifts to cover student activities; dealing with distraught or difficult individuals; meeting deadlines for incident documentation.

Physical Demands

Requires visual concentration and physical dexterity; standing for prolonged periods; working outdoors in inclement weather; exposure to confrontational situations; involvement with restraint of students or adults; yearly physical testing to ensure ability to perform duties.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, training, skills, and experience necessary for the assignment; one (1) year of experience in law enforcement preferred; training or experience in drug/alcohol abuse awareness, prevention, and control preferred; experience with youth preferred; training or experience working with diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural groups preferred.
