Rheumatology Physician Assistant – Wasilla, AK

The Rheumatology PA is responsible for practicing medicine with physician supervision, conducting examinations, writing prescriptions, and providing a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services within the Rheumatology department. The role may include administrative duties and fulfills specific contract parameters and continuing education requirements.

Essential Functions
  • Conduct physical exams, assess health status, order and interpret tests, prescribe medications, and treat illnesses and conditions including giving injections; consults with physicians as needed and refers to physicians for more complicated medical cases.
  • Monitor therapies and provide continuity of care.
  • Triage patient calls, evaluate patient problems, and respond to emergencies including the use of CPR.
  • Counsel patient/family on preventive health care.
  • Document patient information and care in the medical record.
  • Provide oversight as needed for the infusion department.
Competency Knowledge
  • Knowledge of the medical model and roles of physicians and physician assistants; familiarity with anatomy.
  • Knowledge of pharmacology, pathophysiology, clinical medicine, and physical diagnosis.
  • Knowledge of patient assessment techniques including medical histories, physicals, evaluating health status and compliance with care recommendations.
  • Knowledge of diagnosing and treating medical problems and developing care plans.
  • Knowledge of documentation in medical records in a confidential manner.
Skills
  • Gathering and analyzing physiological, socioeconomic, and emotional patient data.
  • Accurately evaluating patient problems in person or via phone and providing appropriate advice, intervention, or referral.
  • Developing or revising patient care plans based on patient status.
Abilities
  • Ability to make responsible decisions within scope of practice.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with physicians on complicated cases.
  • Ability to educate patients, families, and staff in a user‑friendly manner.
  • Ability to demonstrate eye–hand coordination, full range of motion, and manual dexterity.
Required qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and completion of a Physician Assistant program.
  • National certification as a Physician Assistant; a valid state PA license and recertification.
  • CPR certification.
Preferred (in addition to required)
  • Four years of health care experience prior to PA program, plus one year of PA experience, preferably in a clinical setting.
