After a family has been investigated, a Family Based Safety Services (FBSS) worker helps them make changes to protect their children from abuse and neglect and keep them safe s involves coordinating services offered by the agency, the family’s community, and extended family.
Newly hired employees holding a Master’s Degree in Social Work may qualify for an increased starting salary.
Essential Job Functions- Responds quickly in crisis situations.
- Provides time‑limited in‑home services tailored to families’ needs by identifying insufficient protective capacities, developing treatment plans, and utilizing necessary resources to minimize risk and ensure child safety.
- Assesses child safety and takes appropriate action to protect the child, including removal if necessary.
- Interacts objectively with caretakers who have abused or neglected children.
- Discusses family issues related to income, money management, and personal relationships that families consider personal and private.
- Manages encounters with family members who are angry and/or scared.
- Identifies resources and community support available to the family.
- Assists parents in recognizing behaviors that lead to child abuse or neglect and empowers them to make necessary behavioral changes.
- Determines actions to remove or reduce an immediate threat, including working with families to identify safe family members, testifying in court for emergency protective services, placing children in substitute care, and referring families for crisis intervention therapy or other community resources.
- Gathers family and kinship information to support placement decisions when the child is placed in DFPS custody.
- Documents all relevant information and completes required forms accurately and timely.
- Works flexible hours beyond 8 a.m.–5 p.m., Monday–Friday.
- Maintains a balance of objectivity and empathic understanding when engaging families in stressful or crisis situations.
- Builds and maintains effective working relationships with law enforcement, judiciary, legal resources, medical professionals, and community resources.
- Attends and participates in trainings, meetings, and staffings.
- Performs other duties as assigned to maintain unit operations.
- Promotes and demonstrates respect for cultural diversity and competency among coworkers and all contacts.
- Attends work regularly in accordance with agency leave policy.
