Overview – The Brown & Sharpe Set‑Up Operator is responsible for setting up, adjusting, and operating Brown & Sharpe automatic screw machines to produce precision metal components according to specifications. This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to read blueprints and use precision measuring instruments to ensure consistent quality and efficiency.
Responsibilities- Set up Brown & Sharpe automatic screw machines, including tool changes, collet selection, cams, gears, and feed mechanisms.
- Interpret blueprints, process sheets, and job orders to determine machine setup and operation requirements.
- Adjust machine controls and tool settings to achieve proper dimensions, surface finish, and part quality.
- Perform first‑piece and in‑process inspections using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other precision tools.
- Troubleshoot and correct setup or machining problems as they arise.
- Monitor machine operation to ensure continuous production and adherence to quality standards.
- Maintain accurate production and quality records.
- Perform preventive maintenance, cleaning, and minor repairs on assigned equipment.
- Collaborate with supervisors, engineers, and quality inspectors to improve production processes and part quality.
- Follow all company safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work area.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 2 years of experience setting up and operating Brown & Sharpe automatic screw machines or similar (preferred).
- Strong knowledge of tooling, feeds, speeds, and machining operations.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and mechanical drawings.
- Skilled in using precision measuring instruments and gauges.
- Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Commitment to maintaining quality, safety, and efficiency standards.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 40 lbs.
- Manual dexterity and good hand‑eye coordination.
- Visual acuity to inspect parts and read precision measurements.
- Manufacturing environment with moderate noise levels.
- Exposure to oil, metal chips, and machinery typical of a machining shop.
