West Side Middle School Assistant Coach

Summary of Assignment

This assignment is accountable for instructing middle and/or alternate student athletes in a specific sport activity and providing leadership in helping each participating student achieve a high level of skill, appreciation for the values of discipline and sportsmanship, and an increased level of self‑esteem.

Minimum Education & Experience
  • Certificate of Completion for Module 15 from the Connecticut Coaching Education Program.
  • Connecticut State Department of Education Coach permit or Temporary Coach permit.
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certificates.
  • Life Guard Certification – Swimming Only.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Successful completion of pre‑employment process.
  • Incumbents may be required to possess and retain a current Motor Vehicle operator’s license.

  • Knowledge of coaching techniques and human behavior.
  • Knowledge of the specific sport.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and board policies regarding student conduct.
  • Basic equipment repair and maintenance skills as applicable.
  • Effective, active listening skills.
  • Organizational and problem‑solving skills.
  • Public speaking skills.
  • Clear oral and written communication.
  • Ability to diffuse potentially volatile situations and establish rapport with students.
  • Ability to physically perform essential functions and recognize/treat minor athletic injuries.

  • Coaching, leadership, and teamwork abilities.
Essential Functions
  • Assist in improving the program and scheduling non‑league games and officials.
  • Assist in purchasing equipment and supplies.
  • Assist players in injury prevention and care.
  • Prepare outside facilities for practice sessions.
  • Attend clinics, camps, seminars, and coaches’ interpretation meetings.
  • Coach the assigned sport at the middle school level.
  • Collect all uniforms and equipment at season’s end.
  • Communicate with classroom teachers and the head coach regarding strategies and procedures.
  • Comply with board policies and district procedures.
  • Develop and enforce training rules; enforce eligibility requirements.
  • Ensure appropriate dress, safety, and proper care of equipment and organization of practices.
  • Evaluate players and maintain respect for confidential information.
  • Monitor locker‑room condition, participate in awards programs, and promote positive public relations.
  • Provide a positive learning environment and promote team values.
  • Report injuries to the school nurse and/or principal.
  • Respond to routine questions and requests appropriately.
  • Maintain equipment, supplies, and uniforms inventory; schedule fundraising activities as approved.
  • Oversee training schedule and conduct practices and scrimmages as approved.
  • Serve as a role model for students and verify paperwork compliance.
Physical and Mental Requirements

Applicants must have adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, and visual and auditory acuity. They must maintain physical fitness sufficient to perform the responsibilities of the assignment.

Vacancy Filling

Vacancy will be filled by a qualified active teacher in the WTA bargaining unit who works at the building where the vacancy exists, in accordance with Article 10(2) and 10(6)(a). If no qualified active teacher applies, the vacancy will be filled by qualified active teachers from within the school district.
