Enthusiastic educators are invited to join Hawkeye Community College’s Van G. Miller Adult Learning Center as part‑time English Language Learning (ELL) instructors on a substitute basis. Instructors will teach morning classes ranging from Pre‑Literacy to Advanced, guiding adult immigrants and refugees toward high‑school equivalency or improved English proficiency.
Essential Job Functions- Teach morning ELL classes as assigned, delivering face‑to‑face instruction with some asynchronous online components.
- Develop standards‑based lesson plans and assessments tailored to specific skill levels.
- Integrate the College and Career Readiness Standards, 21st Century Employability Skills, English Language Proficiency Standards, and CASAS Life and Work competencies.
- Address all skill areas—reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, vocabulary—within each lesson.
- Utilize classroom technology and digital literacy tools.
- Provide instruction on EL civics, citizenship, digital literacy, math, financial literacy, and employability.
- Prepare students for postsecondary education, training, and employment.
- Maintain accurate attendance and assessment records.
- Differentiated instruction based on student needs.
- Collaborate on standards‑based curriculum development.
- Attend staff meetings and professional development sessions.
- Apply retention and motivation strategies.
- Continuously learn and implement new instructional strategies.
- Coordinate with teachers, administrators, and staff for student success.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and college requirements and maintain student confidentiality.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Attend on‑campus sessions in accordance with the remote‑work policy.
- Bachelor’s degree in TESOL, education, English, teaching, or a related field.
- Demonstrated ability to work with students across varying instructional levels.
- Strong communicative skills in writing and speaking.
- Proficiency with classroom technology, Google Applications, Microsoft Office, and video‑conferencing tools.
- Experience with diverse student populations and departments.
- Organizational skills and adherence to policies and procedures.
- Capacity to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Master’s degree in TESOL.
- K‑12 teaching certification.
- Additional coursework or certification in ESL/TESOL.
- Prior teaching experience in adult ESL.
- Experience in AEL, HSC, ABE, or ELL programs.
Substitute work occurs during fall and spring semesters, Monday‑Thursday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Requires proficiency in technology use, visual acuity, hand‑eye coordination, and the ability to perform basic office tasks. Interactions occur in person, by telephone, and online.
Employment Status- Hourly, part‑time, grant‑funded position.
- Hourly rate: $18.05.
