Hawkeye Community College is seeking a full‑time, nine‑month faculty Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Instructor / Clinical Coordinator to join our team. In our MLT program, students build a strong foundation of skills and competencies needed to be successful in today’s fast‑paced medical environment. Students are guided with support from faculty who possess both the necessary academic credentials and industry experience within their respective disciplines. Our MLT program prepares students in a variety of settings, including an on‑site laboratory/clinical setting that is fully equipped to prepare them for medical laboratory work, including a BSL2 fully functioning medical lab.
This full‑time, nine‑month position may include days and evenings, and various sites and formats (face‑to‑face, online, labs and clinicals) while also being responsible for the coordination of the clinical sites and adjunct instructors. Instructional courses may include courses such as: didactic delivery, critical lab sessions, the use of SIM, and clinical rotations. We are looking for a knowledgeable, positive professional role model to inspire our students.
The college provides a two‑year faculty induction & mentoring program to support our newest faculty members.
- Coordinates the clinical education component for the program at clinical sites, virtually and in SIM.
- Develops and maintains relationships and contracts with clinical sites, including site coordinators of clinical education (SCCEs), clinical instructors (CIs) and Simulation Center.
- Evaluates a clinical site’s ability to offer quality clinical education.
- Manages the assignment of students to clinical sites.
- Conducts clinical site visits.
- Coordinates site, virtual and SIM clinical experiences.
- Fills in or substitutes as needed in class instruction, labs and clinicals.
- Provides high‑quality instruction and leadership to the students in the MLT program(s).
- Prepares daily instructional plans and materials.
- Uses various instructional modalities as needed.
- Employs appropriate instructional methods and materials to meet stated objectives, assess student accomplishments, and provide progress reports.
- Formulates and maintains curriculum for assigned courses.
- Maintains cooperative relationships with the Dean, supervisors, other faculty, the program’s Advisory Committee, all divisions of the College, prospective employers, students and the community.
- Participates in campus committees as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Regular on‑campus or onsite attendance is considered an essential function of the position.
- Associate’s degree and 3,000 hours of recent and relevant experience.
- Graduated from an NAACLS accredited Medical Laboratory Technology program.
- At least two years of full‑time work experience in a clinical laboratory within one of the following areas: hematology, clinical chemistry, immunohematology, microbiology, serology and urinalysis within the last five years.
- Registered Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist as designated by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or National Credentialing Association (NCA).
- Demonstrated ability to learn and apply new and current technical skills and ideas.
- Demonstrated strong organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to travel to and from clinical sites.
- Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills to positively interact with students, faculty, and staff.
- Demonstrated motivation to serve students from all backgrounds and educational experiences.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a wide array of faculty, staff, students, and the general public professionally and personably.
