The Design Engineer is responsible for performing a variety of engineering duties that support all departments, with a primary focus on tooling and fixture design for deep draw transfer and progressive presses. This role ensures manufacturability, quality, and efficiency across production while driving process improvements and innovation.
The ideal candidate will possess strong mechanical aptitude, hands‑on experience with US Baird, Waterbury Farrel, and Bruderer presses, and proficiency in Solid Works and Inventor.
Responsibilities- Analyze and interpret customer drawings; apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (
GD&T) and blueprint reading skills. - Determine the feasibility of parts for production on transfer presses, including operation sequence, material requirements, and press selection.
- Estimate time and cost to engineer, build, and develop tooling.
- Design tooling sets, fixtures, gauges, and other devices to ensure manufacturability, quality, and efficiency.
- Support toolmakers with troubleshooting and problem‑solving during forming and tooling issues.
- Lead process optimization initiatives to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance product quality.
- Integrate advanced manufacturing technologies and lead new product introductions and process improvement projects.
- Create and maintain technical drawings in Solid Works and Inventor, adhering to company standards.
- Maintain and organize drawings and documentation using company software systems.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of deep drawn transfer press operations.
- Experience with US Baird, Waterbury Farrel, and/or Bruderer presses required.
- Proficiency in Solid Works and/or Inventor preferred.
- Familiarity with geometric tolerancing (GD&T) and blueprint interpretation.
- Knowledge of basic quality control equipment (comparator, micrometer, caliper, gauge blocks).
- Excellent communication, organization, and prioritization skills.
- Ability to forecast time and cost for new tooling projects.
- Automotive or similar industry experience is a plus.
