Overview
The Walker Beacon School is a coeducational therapeutic middle and high school program for students with mental health, social, and emotional challenges. The Special Education Lead Teacher will develop and implement course curricula in the assigned areas of teaching and provide consultation to general education teachers. This position will serve as a mentor and direct supervisor to new/less experienced educators who may require or benefit from more direct guidance and support in areas of lesson planning and classroom management.
Educationand Licensure
Required: Bachelor’s Degree with certification in Moderate Special Needs, 5-12
Preferred: Master’s Degree
Required: 3 years direct teaching experience
Essential Functions- Develop and implement course curricula particular to assigned areas of teaching.
- Develop formative and summative assessments, and provide evaluative feedback, for each student in every class.
- Provide consultation to other teachers who have students with learning disabilities in their classes.
- Maintain attendance records for each class or session; posting the attendance daily.
- Maintain grade records for each class.
- Share in finding and ordering of new curriculum materials.
- Create a safe environment by incorporating therapeutic supports into the classroom, and enforcing all school rules and guidelines.
- Attend, create and lead scheduled meetings, professional development trainings as scheduled or assigned.
- Complete and submit course outlines and unit plans for each course.
- Participate in fulfilling administrative tasks for special education students, such as Progress Reports and Individual Educational Plans.
- Meet bi-weekly with the Education Coordinator or Principal for supervision.
- Document critical incidents, as needed.
- Act as Academic Advisor/Homeroom Teacher to selected students.
- Share information on student progress with other members of the Beacon staff, including clinicians, guidance counselors, the nurse and administrators.
- Participate in the milieu, including leading activities, advising clubs, monitoring the Commons and other student areas.
- Provide academic support to assigned students.
- Communicate regularly with students and families about progress and/or concerns.
- Provide direct supervision to assigned staff members.
- Meet regularly with educational staff to provide instructional guidance and support/mentoring in areas including, but not limited to, the following: lesson and unit planning; classroom management; basic training on school platforms (Power School, Google Classroom, ESPED, etc);
Walker Beacon instructional and general policies and procedures; student assessments, feedback and grading; caregiver communications and expectations; curriculum pacing, scope and sequence; and other duties as assigned.
