Field Service Engineer – Gates, Barriers & Security Systems

Location: South East (ideally based within 20 miles of Watford)

Salary: £35,000 basic + overtime + on-call allowance (OTE £45,000–£50,000+)

Training provided | Career growth | Hands-on, varied field work

You MUST hold a British passport and have NO criminal convictions as you will require security clearance.

We’re supporting a leading engineering firm that designs, installs, and maintains physical security systems across the UK. They’re looking for a Field Service Engineer with a strong mechanical background to join their team.

You’ll be working on installations, maintenance, and repairs of high-security systems such as gates, barriers, blockers, and turnstiles — with full training provided. While electrical experience isn’t essential, being comfortable using a multi-meter to check voltages on motors or similar equipment would be a real advantage.

Due to the nature of some client sites,
random drug and alcohol tests may be carried out.

Why this role?
  • £35,000 base salary
  • Overtime at 1.3x after 40 hours (weekdays)
  • Uncapped overtime and weekend work available
  • On-call rota with generous allowances (1-in-5, moving to 1-in-6)
  • 22 days holiday + bank holidays (rising to 25 after 2 years)
  • Company van (business use only), tools, PPE, mobile phone and uniform provided
  • Long-term progression — training on electrical/controls systems available once core role targets are met
What you’ll be doing
  • Installing, servicing and repairing gates, barriers, blockers, and turnstiles
  • Attending breakdowns and carrying out fault-finding/diagnostics
  • Cutting induction loops into concrete/tarmac (training & tools provided)
  • Using mechanical skills daily – hands-on repair and maintenance work
  • Completing electronic job sheets via tablet/smartphone
  • Delivering great customer service on-site
  • Travelling across the South East, with occasional overnight stays
We’re looking for people with…
  • Strong mechanical background (essential) — ideally from one of the following:
    • Agricultural machinery maintenance
    • Conveyor systems / material handling equipment
    • Plant fitting / digger or heavy equipment repairs
    • Shift fitting in a factory
    • Site-based equipment such as wheel washes
  • Basic electrical understanding (advantageous) — e.g. using a multi-meter, motors, or 24v/240v systems
  • Full UK driving licence (clean preferred)
  • Physically fit and comfortable with outdoor/manual work (including confined spaces)
  • Willing to travel, stay away when needed, and take part in an on-call rota
  • Able to pass a safety-critical medical & face-fit test (must be clean-shaven for P3 mask use)
  • British passport & no criminal convictions (security clearance required)
