Instructional Assistant, CDL (part-time) – Merrill Campus
Northcentral Technical College (NTC) invites applications for a part‑time Instructional Assistant who will support our CDL program at the Public Safety Center of Excellence in Merrill, Wisconsin.
Job SummaryThe Instructional Assistant will work with CDL faculty and full‑time Instructional Assistants to facilitate the Trucking Driving (Class
A) Technical program and Straight Truck (Class
B) certificate. The role is Monday‑through‑Friday, daytime hours up to 25 hours per week.
- Provide direct support to faculty during student training.
- Prepare tractors, trailers, and driving courses for student activities.
- Lead formative lab instruction when faculty are unavailable.
- Assist students with driving techniques as requested.
- Recommend procedural and safety discussion topics based on student observations.
- Treat all students and customers with respect at all times.
- Issue driving procedures and ensure student operation of vehicles in a safe manner.
- Participate in in‑service training and industrial workshops relating to vehicle operation.
- Assist faculty with procurement of materials and supplies (pickup and delivery).
- Assist at setting up student activities.
- Proctor tests, quizzes and performance assessments.
- Monitor attendance and vehicle usage.
- Assist in documenting vehicle maintenance.
- Maintain an inventory of instructional materials and equipment within the lab.
- Coordinate the activities of work‑study students as directed by faculty.
- Monitor and prepare the track and vehicles for student use.
- Demonstrate skills as needed with faculty direction.
- Report repair requirements on all vehicles to faculty.
- Assist faculty in monitoring students on operational safety.
- Maintain proficiency in truck driving as needed to support the program.
- Minimum two years (4,000 hours) of occupational experience in the truck driving industry.
- Thorough understanding of DOT requirements, CDL testing, and safety protocols.
- Valid Wisconsin Class A CDL and ability to meet college insurance and DOT testing regulations.
- Ability to work effectively with students of diverse backgrounds, ages, and abilities.
- Professional ability to provide student feedback and adequate computer skills to assist with course software.
