Job Summary

The Technical Assistant, Wood Science provides direct assistance and support in the Wood Technology Center of Excellence lab spaces at NTC’s Antigo campus. This position will serve as an instructional resource in the provision of learning activities, including lab oversight, student assistance, and the preparation of instructional equipment and resources.

Additionally, this position will monitor and maintain existing equipment, set-up and install new equipment, move equipment between lab spaces and support faculty in the set-up and use of equipment in NTC’s WTCE, Saw Filing lab, and Sawmill facility. This position will also provide program support to the instructors as needed, including attending recruitment events, supporting K‑12 partner visits, acting as a contact for NTC industry and educational partners, and supporting consistent marketing for the Wood Science program.

Essential

Functions And Responsibilities Student Support
  • Assist the instructors with the setting‑up and delivery of lab activities for students in all our Wood Technology Center of Excellence Lab spaces, including the Saw Filing Lab and Sawmill.
  • Support the monitoring of student attendance, progress, and use of our lab spaces.
  • Assist students with their use of technology, facilities, and equipment.
  • Proctor tests, quizzes and performance assessments administered in our labs.
  • Assist with remediation of students.
  • Demonstrate proper equipment operation skills to students as needed, as directed by the instructors.
  • Prepare instructional materials for student lab projects.
  • Assist the instructors in monitoring students on operational safety.
Technical Support
  • Assist with the procurement of lab materials and supplies (including pickup and delivery).
  • Coordinate and carry out maintenance and repair requirements for lab equipment.
  • Identify, monitor and set‑up lab equipment.
  • Coordinate and carry out the transportation of lab equipment between campuses and to/from partner locations.
  • Assist in the running of the Wood Technology Center of Excellence Lab spaces, including the Saw Filing Lab and Sawmill.
  • Monitor, maintain, develop, and improve Wood Science lab spaces, equipment, and processes.
  • Maintain an inventory of instructional materials and equipment within the lab.
  • Maintain inventories of supplies, tools, and parts for the program and students.
  • Coordinate the identification of program equipment and tools.
  • Participate in in‑service training and industrial workshops pertaining to the operation and applications of lab equipment.
  • Maintain proficiency in wood manufacturing technology as needed to support our academic and continuing education programs and courses.
Program Support
  • Recommend lab procedural and safety discussions topics to the instructors based on observed student practices in the lab.
  • Work with program instructors to support the reviewing and updating of program curriculum and the integration of new technologies and trends, including development of materials, videos, and lessons.
  • Curricular and Laboratory support college initiatives related to the forest products industry.
  • Assist the instructors with the setting up of major lab activities and creating virtual lessons.
  • Assist in the coordination of work‑study student activities as directed by the instructors.
